Week of January 3rd

Team -

Thank YOU for being the supportive, caring, loving individuals you are. We have worked through yet another week in which we faced a tragic event from the previous weekend. Many central office folks, board members, community members and parents commended us on the way we have handled this and took care of the young people within the walls of our building. We have unfortunately become well versed with these experiences and our professionalism and dedication to everyone surrounding us during these tragic events continue to show everyone the type of people who work at SWHS. Thank you once again for everything you have done and of course, for being you.
Only FULL instructional days left and two of these include non state exams with blocks 1/3 non state exams on Thursday January 11th followed by blocks 2/4 exams on Friday. These two days are regular school days. Exempting the exams on these two days do not excuse any student from school on these days, however, students do not have to attend school the following week in which their class would have been scheduled. Please work with your neighbors and/or teammates if you are needing any students to be supervised while providing your exams during the Thursday/Friday non state exam blocks. This is a perfect opportunity for students to be studying for other exams, or even making up any work if necessary. The following week, January 16th to Friday, January 20th will test blocks 1-4 for all state exams. These 4 days will end at 1:05 for dismissal. Students should be in dress code for all exams and will not be allowed to take their exam if our of dress code. Please reach out to your child's teachers if you have more questions related to the exams.

Please make sure you are alerting the student's grade level counselor and administrator if you are nervous about he/she failing your class. Additionally, please remind students of their make up time responsibilities and any work that needs to be made up. We have very little time left and when we return from the holidays, exams and exam preparation will be focused on.

Testing exam is as followed:

Thursday, January 11 - Blocks 1 and 3 will test teacher made exams. 2 and 4 are regular classes
Friday, January 12- Blocks 2 and 4 will test teacher made exams. 1 and 3 are regular classes
Note - Class times will be adjusted slightly for the exam classes

Tuesday, January 16 - Block 1 (Day ends at 1:05)
Wednesday, January 17 - Block 2 (Day ends at 1:05)
Thursday, January 18 - Block 3 (Day ends at 1:05)
Friday, January 19 - Block 4 (Day ends at 1:05)
Monday, January 22 - Make up exam day

Exam exemptions can only be used on non state exams, Thursday 1/11 and Friday, 1/12. Exam exemptions will be distributed on Tuesday, January 9th in the cafeteria during all lunches. In order to earn an exemption card, the student must be in attendance 97% for the entire semester and without any unexcused absences.  Please share this schedule and process with your students.

As we finish these past few days exams, let's be reminded to teach bell to bell, not allow students to use the restroom in the beginning or end of instruction, remind students to use the cafeteria bathroom during lunch, do not dismiss students from any class early, do not use class time for fundraising collections, etc.

Last, please enjoy the holidays/break. You all deserve it!!!.

Week of December 11th

Team -

We are entering the last FULL week before the holiday break. Please make sure you are alerting the student's grade level counselor and administrator if you are nervous about any students failing your class. Additionally, please remind students of their make up time responsibilities and any work that needs to be made up. We have very little time left and when we return from the holidays, exams and exam preparation will be focused on.

Last week, I reminded everyone to pay attention to dress code. I mentioned the word consistency again. With us easing the dress code policy dramatically this past summer, it should be easier to monitor. It is disappointing that students are taking advantage of only select teachers on campus because, as they say, "he/she doesn't check dress code". The same applies with electronics and food/drinks in the classroom. If the student senses you do not care, they will not either. However, here is an additional problem...... these students then report to their next teacher with a belief that the expectations not monitored in the previous class SHOULD not be monitored in their following classes, and therefore causes an uneasy situation as well as hinders the relationship building efforts of all. We are all in this together.

Congratulations to all winners of the Instructional Core Values Awards this past Wednesday!  Great job and we look forward to presenting so many more awards throughout the year!

Week of December 4th

Team -

I hope everyone's week back from Thanksgiving was as pleasant as could be. As we move into December, we are only 5 weeks away from the end of the semester, meaning roughly 4 weeks left until testing. Please remind the students of this short window in which they need to make up work and time, and make positive decisions as they press towards the end of the semester. December 9th is the next Saturday School for make up time. 8am - Noon in the media center. Remember to contact parents of students who currently have Ds, and Fs, as well as attendance issues that are causing their grade to be at a 55 (even last quarter) rather than their earned grade if higher.

Please make sure you are alerting the student's grade level counselor and admin if you are nervous about someone failing your class.

PLEASE pay attention to dress code. The kids are "coming out of pocket". Time to be consistent with the already reduced dress code. Collared button up shirts must be buttoned. T-shirts must be SWHS gear, dresses and shorts should be relatively close to the knee.  Please, please, please check for dress code... don't leave it for the next teacher to address it.

The ACT WorkKeys assessment is a tool to show your child’s career readiness and employability.  All seniors who are Career and Technical Education concentrators—meaning they have taken 4 or more classes in the same career cluster are required to take the assessment. If eligible, seniors will test next week on Tuesday, December 5th or Wednesday, December 6th from 8:35-12:00 in the Coggins’ Gym.  All students who meet the criteria have been given a parent letter with more information about the WorkKeys, and their specific test date. Teachers wil be informed of who is taking this test, when, and where.
