Week of January 28

Hello Ranchers,

Monday is a Professional Development day. We will welcome a representative from the organization Teaching Tolerance here to facilitate the first of two Professional Developments presented from Southern Poverty Law Center. Our facilitator will be Sarah Blackburn and she will present the workshop "Facilitating Critical Conversations."

The location of the PD will be in the Media Center and we will begin promptly at 8:30. Our schedule for that day will be as follows:

1st Session: 8:30-11:30 (AM break will be provided)
Lunch 11:30-12:30 (Lunch will be provided for all staff)
2nd Session: 12:30-3:30 (PM break will be provided)

Please know we are aware that the 28th is right before we start the 2nd semester, however, this is a paid PD. If it were one of our own PDs, taught by a GCS employee, we would have gladly moved it.
From Tracy Repko...
Please administer the ballots for WINTER COURT during homeroom on Tuesday, 1/29.
This is the ONLY OPPORTUNITY TO DO THIS, so please make sure you take the time to complete it, as well as check with any teacher that is absent or new near your classroom.
·                     Directions will be attached to ballots.
·                     Ballots will be in your box by Monday afternoon.

·                     When you have finished, please immediately return the unfolded ballots with someone trustworthy to Repko in A207!!!  Please be sure that your name is somewhere on the stack so that I may check you off.

Please mark February 11th as a the tentative 2nd semester walk the schedule night. 5:30 - 7:30 starting in the auditorium. Please plan appropriately to be in attendance for this evening.
From the desk of Kristy Cline...
As of today 1/25/19 (dates may change)

All grades MUST be submitted by the end of the day Friday, February 1st.

*****English II & English III teachers may be affected with a delay in exam scores, please enter the following until the scores are in:

2nd qtr = actual grade
Exam (E1) = INC
Final grade (F1) = INC
(hold off on giving me your score sheets until exam scores are in)

*****Math 1 & Math 3 teachers will be averaging Q1 & Q2 for Final grades (F1) - no exam grades

Dates to use for Exams are 1/24 & 1/25.  Or you can just enter the grade in the Grade column of the E1 term and skip creating an assignment.  Either way works.

Grade changes can be submitted after spreadsheets have been turned in.  I have attached the grade change form that has to be filled out for all grade changes. You will make the change in your gradebook but you have to give me the form to let me know what you have changed in order for me to store the grade in their historical marks.

Students that need to make up time due to too many absences should receive an “55” under Q1 or Q2 (F1 will be the average) and use comment code:
56244- A “55” indicates the attendance policy was violated.

You will need to print out and give to me only the Score Sheet which is your spreadsheet with assignments, Qtr 1 & 2, Exam & Final (Follow instructions) – Don’t give until 2/1

Report cards will be printed on February 5th and they will be given to students Wednesday  Feb. 6th.    This may change
10 Day Recovery – 1/29 to 2/11
Teachers change grade – 2/12

Restore – 2/13
Once again, thank you to the entire staff for reminding students to wear their cards correctly. Please reinforce to the students to be wearing the cards around their neck. If you have any feedback or issues, please share that with Mr. Miller. We appreciate all the feedback to date so far that has allowed us to further improve this implementation. Please help us and continue to reinforce the OneCard expectations. I am hearing the request for these cards to be shown in the halls, in classes, in the cafeteria, upon entrance.... I love it. We want the students in the habit of displaying the cards at all times, blue lanyard around the neck, not in the pocket, not inside the shirt, etc. If we start this with high expectations now, I can assure you there will be less of a battle as we proceed. Last, I have requested a meeting with COO Scott McCully to review the pros and Cons and the long range planning of this process to work out a bunch of kinks. I will keep you informed of anything that comes out of that meeting. Thank you again for reinforcing this.

Week of January 14

Hello Ranchers,

First and foremost, I need to share you some unfortunate news. As many of you know, one of our SW family members, Carolyn Cheriyan, has been struggling with her health. It's been a long and hard road to find out what has been causing her poor health. This past week, Carolyn has found out she has been diagnosed with Leukemia  The good news is that she has informed me there is a plan in place for this. While Carolyn has approved of me sharing this news with the staff, I personally ask you to please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she fights this disease.  Thank you.

We are down to the wire with regular instructional days left. please remember to be in constant communication with your students' parents if they are in the D/F range, or dropping from an A to C. Make contact if attendance or behavior is an issue. Make the effort to make positive calls to students, specifically the students who need that praise to the home. I can assure you that those positive calls go a very long way! Teachers of seniors specifically need to keep the graduation team in the loop of those who are in danger of failing. Graduation team = Hettenbach, Phillips, Rainey and Counselor

If you need a second day (This would be January 15th) for your teacher made exam (i.e. foreign language for the speaking part, please speak to Mr. Hettenbach. Truly, there should not be many reasons for tests exceeding the teacher made exam times provided)

Please mark February 11th as a the tentative 2nd semester walk the schedule night. 5:30 - 7:30 starting in the auditorium. Please plan appropriately to be in attendance for this evening.

The OneCard system is looking very strong considering we are a school of 1600 and have only been through 12 days of operation. Thank you to Mr. Miller and the teachers manning these stations for a great job!  Thank you to the entire staff for reminding students to wear their cards correctly.

For planning purposes, please know that January 28th, the MANDATORY work day will be Professional Development with the Teaching Tolerance organization. It will be all day. This means there will be no Wednesday PD this month. Absences on this day will only be approved with prior medical appointments/documentation. Also - any parent teacher conferences on this day need to be shared with admin for approval (and are encouraged for scheduling at the beginning or end of the day). This is a paid PD. If this was an "in house" provided PD, we would certainly move it to allow more opportunities to better plan for the 2nd semester.

Week of January 7

Hello Ranchers!

We had a great first two days back! We now have 7 days until teacher made exams start, and 9 until state testing begins. Bell to bell instruction is vital. Digging into the data to find out what individual students are in need of, using corrective instruction rather than re-teaching to meet all students' needs is a must. If certain techniques were not successful the first time, try something different. Collaborate with your colleagues about successful practices used. Make sure you are in constant communication with your students' parents when they are in the D/F range, or dropping from an A to C. Make contact if attendance or behavior is an issue. Make positive calls to students, specifically the students who need that praise to the home. I can assure you that those positive calls go a very long way! Teachers of seniors specifically need to keep the graduation team in the loop of those who are in danger of failing. Graduation team = Hettenbach, Phillips, Rainey and Counselor
Our new Board Member, Khem Irby, over District 6, is planning to visit us on Wednesday between the hours of 11 and 1. Please make sure you know who she is. She can be one of our greatest assets to assist us in need. I am personally excited to have Ms. Irby on our team!
