Round Up for July 13

Staff,

I hope your summer has started off well and staying as cool as possible. As PowerSchool is now available to counselors again, we will begin the work on the overall matrix where we are looking at holes in student schedules, classes that are overloaded as well as classes that do not have enough students. This is constant work with all the moving parts and I am proud to work with the counselors, admin, EC staff, Ms. Cline and others in doing such a great job making the necessary changes for what's right for students, while also keeping teachers in mind as best possible. This week, the Governor is currently planning to announce his decision on the reopening of schools. As I have mentioned before, I am on the GCS reopening task force, and I can tell you that this is a massive undertaking with so many moving parts and over lap with one decision typically affecting a few others. It is clear that there will be no perfect plan. It is also clear that any plan will please one group, while upsetting another. I'm sure you have seen or heard the wide array of feelings as it relates to reopening schools.
This coming week, I plan on addressing a couple areas for the school, as well as seeking input on the fall as it relates to resources, professional development, etc. Please be on the lookout for those e-mails.
If you have any students, or know of any families related to upcoming Fall sports, Coach Christman has provided a detailed plan below with the current expectation to return on July 20th. While we know that this pandemic and how it affects us is constantly fluid, we always must be planning for the "current" set dates.

Additionally, some of you have called, texted, e-mailed me simply to talk about the Fall. while I currently do not have definitive answers as we wait for the Governor's decisions, my door (phone, e-mail) is ALWAYS available to chat. Please do not hesitate on whether or not you should reach out to me.
Please pay attention to this coming week's discussion by the Governor regarding the reopening of schools for the fall. Please remember that GCS can only plan within the orders of the Governor.

Another hot topic is how Fall Sports will start. With the most recent delay, here is the latest with the current proposed start date of July 20th.

SW Athletic Dept. will be collecting all potential Fall Athlete’s Return to Play Paperwork along with the GCS required 2 proofs of residency here at school at the designated time slots below next Tuesday and Wednesday morning, July 14th and 15th.  The drop off location will be in front of the SW Coggins Gymnasium.  We ask that you please wear a mask once you leave your car!  The following forms must be completed in order to Return to Play on July 20th:  NCHSAA Initial Screening Form, Concussion Awareness Form, the GCS Risk Waiver Release Form, and Physical (if expired) and Medical Preparticipation Form (front 2 pages of physical).  All must be signed and dated by the student athlete and Parent.  Also, each student is required to bring in 2 proofs of residency (please see attachment for what proofs are acceptable).  We will have a copy machine on site to make copies if needed.
