Week of March 27, 2017

Team - We finished a busy week ending with a visit from the Western Region Instructional Walk Through Team. I will be sharing feedback with all of those who were observed, in addition to providing general observations to the staff. With that being said, Guided Inquiry observations were the highlight of the walk throughs. Please continue to explore ways to engage students in your class and minimize the "Stand and Deliver" approach. In addition, please continue to make effort towards equitably enforcing managerial items throughout day.

Thank you for your flexibility with the homerooms on Wednesday and getting those teacher recommendations in to PowerSchool. All of Guilford County Schools has moved in this direction of having teacher recommendations placed in PowerSchool. This will allow us to identify class placements and adhere to the student's final selections, therefore minimizing any disturbance in the school wide matrix.  Additionally, while I am still exploring what a modified A/B schedule would look like for a select number of AP classes, this investigation will continue through next year. Thank you to those who have discussed this with peers around the county and provided feedback to me.

In your very next e-mail sent out to your classes, please solicit help for Julie Nichols on the night on NEXT Tuesday, April 4th for the senior project night. You may utilize her email (which wil be sent again on Monday) as a simple copy and paste.

This week, we will be allowing students to follow the Spirit week set forth by Mrs. Repko's Leadership Class. Please reference Mrs. Repko's guide for this week (see e-mail). All additional questions should be guided in her direction.

3rd quarter ends Thursday! Remind your students to complete all items before grades get published!

Remember to PLC this week. Reference Canvas for guiding questions.

Last, and most importantly, thank you for everything you do on a daily basis !  WE ARE...SOUTHWEST!!  Go Cowboys!

Week of March 20, 2017

Team - What a great week! We had a lot to celebrate....Deca club, Chorus, Men's Basketball, Orchestra, all winter sports at the banquet.....and the students responding respectfully about an all spirit top week for dress code. I also want to thank everyone who are equitably enforcing the dress code.... remember.... all students, all classes.

We had another successful Professional Development session on Guided Inquiry and teachers conducting the first teacher-made benchmarks this past week. Also, I want to applaud those who are being cognizant of steps in the discipline process and managerial items that can be addressed at the door, as well as working together to find the right connection that will jump start a student towards success.  We must continue to communicate to each other to find "what works" for the students that may be giving you a difficult time. You may be surprised what your colleague may share as it relates to successful practices with one or more students.... you just need to ask.

Moving forward, please remember it is important to get those teacher recommendations in for all your students. You are recommending what you believe the next appropriate class would be after yours, AP, Honors, CP, etc. Please follow Kristy Cline's directions. You may also be involved with your department providing feedback about criteria for students to be enrolled in Honors and AP classes. you will need to review data that shows students being challenged as well as being successful to come up with this window of criteria. See Ms. Nichols if you have any questions about this.

Thank you for everything you do on a daily basis !  WE ARE...SOUTHWEST!!  Go Cowboys!

Week of March 13, 2017

Team - Thank you for your help with the pep rally on Friday. Please know that I will allow spirit shirts all week if the boys take home the championship on Saturday. Dress code bottoms, spirit tops. Also, thank you to everyone that assisted with the rising 9th grade visit as well as the curriculum fair!

As I shared the In School Suspension data reviewing the last two years, please know I am proud of the direction we are going. Not many schools can say they have a 13% reduction in the gap between white and black students in one year along with an enrollment increase of 6%, or 100+ students. Let's keep this direction going! Remember to utilize extra measures before referring a student. If you need assistance with what steps can be taken, feel free to discuss this with your peers or any administrator. I do plan on collecting additional data on specific reasons behind these ISS placements and I will share those with you when I get more information.

Thank you for everything you do on a daily basis !  WE ARE...SOUTHWEST!!  Go Cowboys!

Week of March 6, 2017

Team - Thank you for supporting all the extra curricular events this past week. This means a lot to the students as they look into the audience/stands and see of their teachers. This also helps build relationships.

Great job on your participation and interest with the Guided Inquiry Professional Development. Ms. Powell, Mrs. Meier and Mrs. Markwood are looking at expanding this professional development for those who want a jump start on this practice.  Keep your eyes open for more information!

Also, thank you for stepping up on the managerial items.  Mr. Medley saw a spike in students visiting his room, but this will go down as students will realize we are all in this together and are equitably enforcing the policies of the school. All classes, all students.

Thank you for everything you do on a daily basis !   GO COWBOYS!
