Week of April 30

Team -

So many things happening lately and so many people to thank.

Kudos to Kim Cofer and the many others who came together and organized a very successful Spring Fling!  We had a great turnout and it looks like a good bit of money was collected for clubs as well as for the PTSA.  Great job!

Fantastic job to the Theatre program in putting on their rendition of Alice and Wonderland! Best attendance I have seen for a play in my 9 years at SW! Keep up the great work!

In addition to those events...Autism Awareness shirt participation, SAVE club start up, ongoing volunteering in damaged areas and supplies collected and delivered for tornado victims, participation in interviews, dialogue about scheduling, and so much more.  It was an extremely busy week but such a productive week. Thank you for everyone who is contributing to a positive environment at SWHS. Please know I have really enjoyed working with the staff as you bring problems AND solutions to the table rather than just complain about what is not working.  Your efforts are making a positive difference!

I hope each and every one of you took a moment out of your past week to give a shout out to our many wonderful administrative professionals. We truly have the best team around!!!!  Thanking for helping the administrative team recognize their work on a daily basis!

I want to re-share a section of last week's blog with some minor additions...
Communication with the homes of our students is a major key to success. More often than not, when having communication with the homes you may find out other items going on in our students' lives. You may come across that the parent may not have the means to access Parent Assist ,or there are some circumstances with our students' parents or guardians' lives. It is possible that the parent is not even existing in the child's life at this time. I can go on and on about the many variables that may be out there, however, it is our responsibility to make that effort to contact our students homes for various reasons, especially when grades are below a C, grades dropping from an A to a C during an interim period, attendance and behavior issues, etc. Also, please understand that the calls are to gather information you may not be aware of,, to guide the parent/guardian in altering the path of their child and assisting you with helping the students reach their academic and behavior potential, as well as find out if you need to reach out to other SW professionals to seek further support for your student. If we are making that call the day before report cards go out, that is not a call that would assist anyone but rather frustrate everyone since it becomes just the purpose of informing. Let's make an effort on being proactive in our communications to the homes. If we put this effort forward on the front end, I am sure we will find these calls making your own lives far easier and the lives of our students far more successful.

Another reminder from previous blogs, as warmer weather is upon us, please make sure you have procedures in place to reinforce the dress code appropriately and daily. Thank you for your approach on maintaining consistency on our campus.

For all staff (classified and certified), it is important that we are consistent in signing out/in with the front office when leaving school during instructional hours (even school related). If you are going off campus for a non student-focused activity, you must use comp time unless approved by me. We offer a tremendous amount of comp time, therefore this should not be an issue. We have done a pretty good job overall this year with this expectation, let's keep it up. The comp time opportunities are certainly there to accrue if needed.

Once again, a reminder as we start approaching the end of the year, GCS is expecting all staff to attend HS Graduation ceremonies and be in regalia. With this expectation, I will provide a FULL day of comp time that can be used for NEXT school year. The Graduation date for SWHS is Saturday, June 16 at 9:00 AM at the Greensboro Coliseum. More information will follow. It is expected that staff have the same expectations as students when it comes to dress attire. In other words, shorts, loafers, tank tops, hats would not be considered appropriate. For those of you that were at graduation last year, it really was a beautiful thing to see and recognize the staff for all that they do in front of 5000 people. You all deserve this at the very least.

Reminder: The building will always be open on Sunday from roughly 7-1 due to Piedmont Chapel church.
