Week of December 3

Hello Ranchers!

A big thank you to all the coaching staff from this past fall season. Thank you for shaping our young people into great young adults on and off the field. You make a major impact on the positive culture of Southwest and I am sure I speak for everyone on staff that we thank you for your efforts each and every day. You make a huge difference!

We have just a little over 4 weeks left before 1st semester exams start. As we continue to approach crunch time, every minute of every class is crucial. Bell to bell instruction is vital. Digging into the data to find out what individual students are in need of, using corrective instruction rather than re-teaching to meet all students' needs is a must. If certain techniques were not successful the first time, try something different. Collaborate with your colleagues about successful practices used. Make sure you are in constant communication with your students' parents when they are in the D/F range, or dropping from an A to C. Make contact if attendance or behavior is an issue. Make positive calls to students, specifically the students who need that praise to the home. I can assure you that those positive calls go a very long way!

This coming week, we will distribute the one cards in homeroom on Wednesday. We have 100 +/- students who need to have their picture taken. This picture process will occur on Tuesday. This list will be distributed Monday afternoon. The scanning will officially start on Thursday. Scanning stations will be in place Monday so students will know what it looks like and be prepared for Thursday. Please know that I understand this will be a growing process. We are one of 7 pilot schools who will will work through all issues and communicate those to central office for the purpose of a more successful rollout to the remaining schools in the district.  Once this gets underway, we will then begin to roll out the Access411 visitor system. We happen to be the only pilot school for this program. More information will be forthcoming about these additional layers of safety and security at our school.

For those of you who teach state tested classes, it is my hope that each of you have reviewed your EVAAS data. I have engaged in very healthy conversations with many of you as you discover areas to improve upon as well as areas to celebrate. I want to thank you ahead of time for your efforts to use this data to make adjustments in your instruction as well as engage in meaningful conversations with your colleagues.  Administration is in the planning phase to discuss the EVAAS data with everyone under their evaluation cycle. If you did not meet growth, or met growth in the negative area, please be prepared to share changes you are making to meet the students' needs. If you collaborate with your colleagues and they have exceeded growth or met growth on the positive end of the spectrum, I highly encourage you to seek out strategies that are successfully implemented.  The more we lean on each other, the easier and more successful you will find instructional delivery to be.

Week of November 26

Hello Ranchers!

I hope each and every one of you enjoyed this well deserved break this past week. Hopefully you all took advantage of this time to relax.

As most of you know, this next stretch with all the breaks, and testing, the time flies by. Please stay on top with the communication with your students' homes. Anything less than Cs, drops from an A to a C, attendance issues, discipline issues, etc. should be worthy of a phone call.  Another suggestion, try to make a few positive phone calls each week. If you don't already do this, go ahead and try this. You will be amazed how well this is received and also set you up in a positive way if you ever need to call back for constructive purposes.

The district has informed us that the one card student identification scanning process now has dates assigned. As Southwest High School is one of seven pilot schools for the district as well as the largest pilot school, the current plan is to distribute the cards the week after Thanksgiving. The following week, we plan on training our staff and implement the process on December 6th. More information will follow if dates change along with additional information to keep you in the loop. More information will follow from Mr. Miller.

As we are on the topic of safety and security, we now have the other entrance of the school on the magnetic entry door system. This means both entrances are now locked and you must buzz in to get into the school (unless you have a key or fob). Also - we will soon be implementing a new visitor system. All visitors ill be required to check in to front office using the new Access411 system at all times. We will share more information about this as well once we start using it.

As a reminder, EVAAS data is now in. Administration will have conversations with all staff regarding student growth. Please make sure you take a moment and review your data. If you did not meet growth, or met growth in the negative area, please prepared to share changes you are making to meet the students' needs. If you share curriculum with your colleagues and they have exceeded growth or met growth on the positive end of the spectrum, I highly encourage you to seek out the strategies that your colleagues are implementing.  The more we lean on each other, the easier and more successful you will find instructional delivery to be.

Last, please make sure you thank the PTSA for receiving your pie on Tuesday!  This is a major task and the PTSA consistently knocks it out of the park.

Week of November 19

Hello Ranchers!

As we approach Thanksgiving, I want to let you know how thankful I am to work with each and every one of you. I hope each of you take this upcoming time off to enjoy quality time with the individuals that are special in your lives. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

As we are on the topic of safety and security, we now have the other entrance of the school on the magnetic entry door system. This means both entrances are now locked and you must buzz in to get into the school (unless you have a key or fob). Also - we have just implemented a new visitor system as of Friday. All visitors must enter and check in with the front office using the new Access411 system at all times.

With only two days before our break, the students will be excited. This means we need to be that much more on our game. Please make sure your lessons are bell to bell, no parties, supervision is occurring in between each and all bells, and we are at our assigned supervision post on time and engaged.

EVAAS data is now in. Administration will have conversations with all staff regarding student growth. Please make sure you take a moment and review your data. If you did not meet growth, or met growth in the negative area, please prepared to share changes you are making to meet the students' needs. Tuesday evening, we have a special presentation on vaping, what Parents need to know. If you feel like you are out of the loop with vaping products, I highly encourage you to attend. The big deal right now is vaping in class right in front of the teacher. As the admin team learned this past week, the upperclassmen are teaching the underclassmen HOW to to do this in front of people without getting caught. It's already happened here on this campus multiple times. Come to this presentation and be in the know!

Pre-ACT test is Tuesday. Please review your e-mails from Mrs. Barnum. Seniors have a senior meeting immediately after announcements. They will be dismissed after the meeting for the purpose of college tours, college applications, job shadowing, service learning opportunities. Juniors will be in homerooms, and freshmen will transition from homeroom to the public speaker and back to home room. We will have lunches by grade level, so please pay attention to e-mails Tuesday. (9th will go first, followed by 11th, then 10th (and any seniors left on campus)

Great job to Coach Manley and the Men's soccer season for a terrific year!  Great job!

Report cards will be printed on Nov. 13th and they will be given to students Wednesday  Nov. 14th at the end of the day (students will go to homeroom at 3:30).
