I hope this message finds everyone warm
and safe from this past storm. Anyone that came in this past week, or attended
workshops will get credit for their days worked. Please communicate with Mrs. Harris. We will work with everyone
else on make up time if needed. If anyone needs to make up time, Mr. Miller could probably use some assistance
on Saturday for Saturday school if anyone wants to collect comp time.
GCS will
inform us all how these days are going to be made up. Please be patient in the
meantime. This issue also brings up the next obstacle..... exams. Without knowing
when the last 5 days of the semester will be, we cannot tie dates to exams days
yet. However, this is how the testing plan will go....
Exams
will be given the last 8 days of the semester...

Teacher made exams (part 1) if approved by Mr. Hettenbach

Even
after the test plan is communicated to the staff, please understand that Mrs.
Barnum may utilize you morning, and/or afternoons if you are not listed on the
test plan. This request could come at a last minute due to a variety of
reasons. Thank you for understanding.
If you need a second day for your teacher made
exam (i.e. foreign language for the speaking part, please speak to Mr.
Hettenbach. Truly, there should not be many reasons for tests exceeding the
teacher made exam times provided)
This coming Tuesday we will be swiping OneCards again, this time with 6 machines rather than 2. Please continue to reinforce the OneCard expectations. I am hearing the request for these cards to be shown in the halls, in classes, in the cafeteria, upon entrance.... I love it. We want the students in the habit of displaying the cards at all times, blue lanyard around the neck, not in the pocket, not inside the shirt, etc. If we start this with high expectations now, I can assure you there wil be less of a battle as we proceed. Some students (roughly 100, still don;t have cards and I am sure they will let you know. Those cards will hopefully be in their possession after the break. Great job and keep it up!
We have just a little over 2 weeks left before 1st semester exams start. Once the county decides on how we will make up these days, we will tie the schedule above with the actual dates.
Please remember, as we continue to approach crunch time, every minute of every class is crucial. Bell to bell instruction is vital. Digging into the data to find out what individual students are in need of, using corrective instruction rather than re-teaching to meet all students' needs is a must. If certain techniques were not successful the first time, try something different. Collaborate with your colleagues about successful practices used. Make sure you are in constant communication with your students' parents when they are in the D/F range, or dropping from an A to C. Make contact if attendance or behavior is an issue. Make positive calls to students, specifically the students who need that praise to the home. I can assure you that those positive calls go a very long way!

Interims will now be distributed on Thursday. While we still do not have many days of instruction for this interim, I believe it is important to get this update out to parents prior to the break.
As a reminder, consistency is so important with what we do as educators. If we want to maintain the safest and most secure environment, we must be visible during all transitions of the day, in the cafeteria, at your supervision posts, checking for dress code, etc. Thank you to everyone who does this on a regular basis. I can assure you it makes a difference. If you are not, please address this expectation immediately. This falls under Standard 1 in your evaluation.
Saturday School is tomorrow Saturday December 15 from 8AM to Noon in the Media Center. Please share this with all your distribution lists. Please make sure you review attendance in your classes and remind students of this opportunity to recover 4 hours of time.
This coming Friday, the last day before break, there are a few events to be aware of. First, Friday is a PTSA jean day. Please check for those bracelets. Second, the PE department is having a heart healthy day. Students in those PE classes can dress in PE attire. Last, we are going to have an ugly holiday sweater/outfit day for staff and students.
Note: At the moment, we will start 5 minutes early starting January 3rd. Nothing else will change in the schedule other than students being guided to class at 8:30 and the late bell being 8:35. It is possible this could change as GCS presents the plan to make up time for these days lost.
