Week of February 25th

Hello Ranchers,

We have a busy week ahead of us with extracurricular activities on the calendar. A reminder that Monday is a regular school day for staff and students, no longer a workday.

Monday night is our annual curriculum night for all under classmen (1st time doing this event for upperclassmen) and rising 9th graders. While all students and parents will be able to interact with all of you regarding all the curricular opportunities at SW, we will also have an AP potential overview as well as FAFSA completion session for families who haven’t completed the FAFSA or have questions regarding it. It is vital that all classes/curriculum are represented by staff.

As we approach this event on February 25th, please fill out the forms below to assist the counselors.

Someone from each content area should complete the signup form.

It’s Registration Time!  GCS has transitioned to using the online registration system via PowerSchool.  This means that teachers input their course recommendations for students into PowerSchool and when students register for classes they see the recommendations that have been made.  It is extremely important that ALL Core (Math, English, Science, & Social Studies) teachers input recommendations for students for BOTH semesters.  Please refer to Kristy Cline's e-mail on 2/18, 2:22PM for specific directions.  GCS requires us to use this system.  If you have questions please ask the grade level counselor or Mrs. Cline.

The teacher recommendation window DEADLINE is March 1.  The registration window for students will open on March 8-March 17.  Please keep in mind that all of the students that you have had in your classes this school year need to have a recommendation in the system.

(Compton-9th, 10th-12th: Graves: A-D, Hawkins: E-L, Richards: M-R, Hudgens: S-Z)

Come check out the 3rd Annual SWHS Black History program from 6PM to 8PM in our auditorium on Thursday.  Cost is $2.00. Come out and support these students who are putting on this wonderful program! If you have attended the last two years, you would agree with me that this is an awesome event!

Grading must be put in PowerSchool each week. If you think as a parent who wants to be an active part of a child's academics, it is hard to play that role when there is no documentation to respond to. Please keep the grades updated each week, and make sure you are providing enough grades as you navigate through the semester.

Please reinforce to the students to be wearing the cards around their neck. Look how happy she is wearing that lanyard!

Week of February 18

Hello Ranchers,

A reminder that Monday is a regular school day for staff and students, no longer a workday.

Interim Reports are distributed to ALL students Monday.

I appreciate everyone's attendance this past Monday night at the Walk the Schedule event. While we typically expect a much lower attendance than the 1st semester's open house, the parents that were here were very pleased and appreciative of your attendance. Thank you.

A reminder to make sure you are calling your parents when your students are not responding to your expectations, both academically and behaviorally.

Grading must be put in PowerSchool each week. If you think as a parent who wants to be an active part of a child's academics, it is hard to play that role when there is no documentation to respond to. Please keep the grades updated each week, and make sure you are providing enough grades as you navigate through the semester.

ACT is Wednesday for all Juniors. Mrs. Barnum will communicate all procedures regarding this.  Juniors do not get an early release after the test. Only seniors get early release after they finish their senior meeting. More details pending any available public speakers will be shared on Monday.

The next big calendar event is February 25th. This is our curriculum night for all under classmen and rising 9th graders. While all students and parents will be able to interact with all of you regarding all the curricular opportunities at SW, we will also have an AP potential overview as well as FAFSA completion session for families who haven’t completed the FAFSA or have questions regarding it. Week of February 11th

Hello Ranchers,

Staff...please mark your calendar as tomorrow, February 11th is the PTSA Walk the Schedule Night. The event starts at 5:30 in the SWHS Auditorium and we will then proceed into ringing the bells to move parents from 1st to 4th blocks starting at 6:00PM, and ending at 7:30. Please track your comp/flex time. This is not optional.
Another calendar event is February 25th. It is vital that all classes/curriculum are represent by staff.
The current window for registration is still 2/11-2/18 for teacher recommendations. Please pay extra attention to e-mails from the counseling department related to this. Pleas remember my recommendations as students should not simply be checked off for the next class. Have meaningful conversations with them regarding the registration process.

Please reinforce to the students to be wearing the cards around their neck. Look how happy she is wearing that lanyard!

Week of February 5th

Hello Ranchers,

Good evening Southwest community!

This coming week is School Counselor's Appreciation Week. Please help me in recognizing the work our School Counseling Department does for our students. There is far more work than most people understand what these talented individuals do on a daily basis. I personally want to thank Mrs. Compton, Ms. Durant, Ms. Graves, Mr. Hawkins, Mrs. Hudgens and Mrs. Richards for the work they contribute to the school. Thank you!

Now that we enter the 2nd week, please make sure you are documenting all sweeps and turning them in to Mrs. O'Neal. All students during all hall movement outside of "in between block" transitions should have hall passes. Staff, please do not send students out of the room without a pass. Also, please make sure you are communicating with Karen Meier about the Media Center usage. Students should not be reporting to the Media Center with a bathroom pass, or without a pass altogether. Students should also be informed that the Media Center is not to be substituted for lunch. If you believe you have a legitimate situation we need to know about, please let the counseling and admin team know about it.

Staff...please mark your calendar as February 11th is the PTSA Walk the Schedule Night. The event starts at 5:30 in the SWHS Auditorium and we will then proceed into ringing the bells to move parents from 1st to 4th blocks.
Another calendar event is February 25th.
From the desk of Kristy Cline...
Please wait for Kristy's e-mail this week regarding grades and the next steps to take! Thank you for your patience as we navigate through this statewide process.
Once again, thank you to the entire staff for reminding students to wear their cards correctly. Please reinforce to the students to be wearing the cards around their neck. If you have any feedback or issues, please share that with Mr. Miller. We appreciate all the feedback to date so far that has allowed us to further improve this implementation. Please help us and continue to reinforce the OneCard expectations. I am hearing the request for these cards to be shown in the halls, in classes, in the cafeteria, upon entrance.... I love it. We want the students in the habit of displaying the cards at all times, blue lanyard around the neck, not in the pocket, not inside the shirt, etc. If we start this with high expectations now, I can assure you there will be less of a battle as we proceed. Last, I have requested a meeting with COO Scott McCully to review the pros and Cons and the long range planning of this process to work out a bunch of kinks. I will keep you informed of anything that comes out of that meeting. Thank you again for reinforcing this.
