Round Up for September 28

Great work team!

I continue to hear great things from the community, especially about how you are working with students during this tough time. We have many GCS employees whose students attend here and they continue to let me know how impressed they are!

This past Thursday, the board voted for High School students to return on January 20th. More details will be communicated as we start preparing for this date. Please make sure you stay in the loop of all GCS and SW communications. A great deal of information is available on our website.  www.gcsnc.com/reopening.

Please share with your parents if they are not an observer in Canvas:

This video has been used district wide to provide information regarding pairing student and parent accounts in Canvas so parents can access what is due, what has been submitted, graded, etc. You’ll see in the video that one of the key pieces is a pairing code that can only originate from the student account holder.

All meeting minutes should be posted by the end of each week by 5:00 pm to Canvas as an attached Word document.

The PLC documents can be found in Canvas. The agenda is attached to this e-mail and the exemplar can be found in Canvas.

SW PLC AGENDA

Remember that we are still following the NC grading policy (10 point scale)... just like we were prior to this past March. Please make sure your weights are alike within your department and shared to your students.

We will be giving the PSAT to all Southwest 10th and 11th grade students IF they complete online registration by October 9.  The online registration link can be found in the QUICK LINKS area of the GCS and the SWHS websites. Students or families who are not comfortable returning to the building to test on October 29, will have the option to take the PSAT on January 26.   The January 26 date is also a National Merit Scholarship qualifying test date for juniors.  Covid protocols will be followed for building entry, social distancing in halls and classrooms and masks that cover both nose and mouth will be required to be worn at all times by staff and students.  Remember you must complete the online registration process by October 9th in order to test at SWHS on October 29.

Feel free to use this link when students tell you they don't have a device, or internet, or need work, etc....

Jessica White is leading the charge with the oversight of delivering work to students houses, as well as the pick up of work. We will only deliver items that are on the tables in the front office foyer area. If you are needing items picked up, you MUST fill out a form to have that work picked up and put on the routes. We now have a steady drop off/pick up system every Tuesday and Thursday.  Please e-mail Jessica White with any questions related to this process.

Staff Round Up for September 21

Great work team!

Thank you again for your daily (and nightly) work during this remote learning. Please take at least SOME time this weekend to relax. Self care is so very important, especially during times like these.

This week, we will need to get student interim reports before Friday end of business. Desiree Wright will be sharing a detailed report that should be easy to e-mail to each teacher. I will send out a connect ed Monday evening informing parents that interim reports will be delivered electronically during the week. I will also let them know that if they do not receive it, to contact you immediately (they may not have their e-mail on file yet).  If you already have a process in place that will best deliver this detailed report to your parents, please feel free to use your method. More info will come on Monday.

Herff Jones will be coming to SW to hand out packets to Seniors that will give them information about ordering their supplies online. These supplies include their cap and gown, class rings, senior gear, etc.

This will take place Friday, September 25th from 10am-2:30pm in the back student parking lot.

*If students cannot make this time or date, instructions are on the flyer for them to follow.

At the same time, we are using this event to also do name verification for the students' diplomas and Lifetouch picture information. This is normally done during homeroom if we were face to face.

Please help us by sharing this information out to any seniors you may teach. Below is a flyer that you can post on your Canvas page (Stephanie Powell e-mailed it on Friday), or email out to your Seniors.

Thank you to Jane Arrington for creating this awesome grades syncing video... which GCS asked if they could use for the system!! Way to go Jane!

Some Caveats about using the Sync Feature:

  1. Only Numeric Grades will sync to PowerTeacherPro  ( not Complete/Incomplete, Letter grades, etc. )
  2. If an assignment is marked Late or Excused in Canvas that will sync to PowerTeacherPro (excused will be marked exempt in PTP)
  3. Assignments marked as Missing will not sync as Missing to PTP (you can mark it as Missing once it is in PTP)
  4. Comments do NOT sync from Canvas to PTP
  5. If you Mark assignments Missing, Incomplete, or Absent or if you add a comment to PTP and then sync the grades from Canvas a second time, all of those marks and the Comments will Disappear! You would have to go to the Assignment tab in Canvas and uncheck that you want it to sync with the SIS in order to avoid those marks and comments from Disappearing!
