Round Up for March 22nd

Thank you for ANOTHER great week! 

You may have realized that students are requesting to be moved to the Remote Cohort more and more each day. On only a few cases have I allowed movement requests with grades under As and Bs. I know some of you have questioned where this policy is coming from. This is not a GCS policy. This is a Mike Hettenbach doing what's right for kids decision.


Students that are not doing well in their academics and have demonstrated failing marks last semester and/or the beginning of the semester are simply showing us "it's not working". Additionally, I have had many students request to be placed on the "C" cohort based on academics, mental health situations, home life, etc. At this current time, it is very rare that I will deny a C cohort request. A conversation with Chris Manley while waiting for our 2nd dosage of shots to occur confirmed the dramatically positive difference in kids being in your class for face to face instruction. Thank you Chris! If anyone would like to discuss the belief behind these requests process, please e-mail me to set up a good time. 

I would also like to thank the various groups I have been speaking to over the past couple of weeks getting feedback on best practices, grading, assignments, hybrid, operations and more. Your voices matter and I appreciate it very much! More conversations seeking feedback are coming!

As a gentle reminder when thinking about grades, we must wholeheartedly prove that the student is emphatically choosing not to work. While I know we have certainly had students in this category, we also have students who have not been reached, nor their parents. Please get Ms. Emily Wright involved if all contacts have failed. At the upcoming faculty meeting we will be moving into Break Out rooms for a short bit to discuss practices that work, as well as practices that we are struggling with. I have printed up all the Fs as of Thursday, March 18th and will be distributing those to each teacher on Monday. That will give you a little less than two days to read the accompanying letter and think about the upcoming exercise on Wednesday morning. As a school we are little south of 23% of all grades with Fs. Please think about your total number of students and the percentage of Fs coming from your classroom and what those barriers are from students succeeding. 


There are obviously an array of barriers, which is why we are setting up this opportunity to speak to each other on Wednesday. Please know that this opportunity is a time we can complain, OR discuss and find alternate ways in reaching our students.  This practice is not a gotcha, how dare you, etc, but rather an opportunity to hear what is working from each other, coach and allow to be coached. Please be open to this experience. 


Last, as we are roughly at the "8 week of instructional days left" window, let's start being aggressive in speaking with the counselors, Derek Anderson, and Emily Wright to set up senior meetings so we can do everything possible as a team to get these students engaged in their work and across the graduation finish line. We have already been involved in a handful so far, so keep them coming! All underclass issues should be brought up to the Grade level admin, and counselors as well. I love this time of the year because this is what SW is KNOWN for!!  Thank you so much! 

Laptop Distribution

  1) Students who have already received a Chromebook laptop from Mrs. Hunt. They do not get a second one.  

 2) Follow the instructions on the school website under Remote Learning to set the students up on their new computer. https://www.gcsnc.com/Page/74124

             -There is a video with step-by-step instructions that you can have the students watch that Mrs. Hunt put together. It is at the top of the page that I linked above. 

3) If students have the old laptop (the ones that go to the computer carts with GCS on the top of the laptop) then collect those from the students WITH THE CHARGER and return to Mrs. Hunt. If students do not have them today, tell them to bring it tomorrow. 

4) Have extras of the new computers? If you have extras, let Mrs. Hunt know and she will come collect them from you. Make sure to keep computers for any students that are absent today to give them tomorrow. 

5) What do we do with the box? If students have taken EVERYTHING out of the box, they can throw the box away if they do not want to keep it. Make sure that they double check that they did not leave something important in the box. 

 6) Something wrong with the computer? If the student is having issues with the computer, please let Mrs. Hunt know. 

7) You do not need to write down any serial numbers and what computer was given to what student. When students log into the computers on campus (which they ALL need to do during 2nd block) it will automatically connect that student with that device and that information is sent downtown by the computer itself. Crazy I know! 😄 

8) The parents need to fill out the Family Agreement Form for GCS Laptops. Students do not fill this out. This is for Parents/Guardians. This form is located under Remote Learning on the school website.

 9) If you want to have a record for yourself where students sign next to their name on a roster to say that you gave them a laptop that is fine but remember NO serial numbers.

Student Lunch Deliveries

Any parents/guardians dropping off lunches for their students must leave their lunch on a table at the inside of the front entrance. The school is not responsible for calling students in classes about this, nor are we responsible for these lunches. Please make sure you communicate this process with your student before school starts for the day. 

LUNCH PROCESS INFO
.       Mrs. Washington will send the link in the morning. (Example instructions below)  
a. Click the link, It must be open in Google Chrome. 
b. Click the star in top right corn, name it as lunch count. 
c. If you cannot see the bookmark tool bar click the 3 dots in top right corner, hover over bookmark, then check show bookmarks bar. 
d. If you still cannot see the lunch count bookmark, click the >> arrows in top right corner, there you will see the list for lunch count bookmark. 
 
2.       1st Block teachers ONLY: Please make sure you ask students for their preference (Vegetarian or meat). You do not need to label the 2nd block teachers. The Cafeteria only needs total numbers for meals.  
3.       2nd Block teachers, as soon as the block starts, please use the ‘Dry Erase’ paper outside your door for your numbers.  Ask your class if they all placed an order from 1st block. if they say "no", send in there order to Mrs. Washington via e-mail. Your lunch will be delivered before the Lunch time outside your door.  
1. Reminder, Use the trashcans in the Hallways as well as the restroom during your lunch times.  
 
Teachers need to have a desk or chair in the Hallway. The Cafeteria Staff is NOT able to place food on the floor, so to prevent class interruption, please make sure there is something to place the food on. I have been asked if a small bookshelf would work as well. That is fine, just label it so that custodians don’t think you are getting rid of it.  
Also, make sure it Is up against the wall, to prevent as much bottlenecking in the hallway from students.

If you have students or parents who approach you with substance abuse concerns, please let me know.  The Lifestyles class and the Tobacco Education classes are still offered – but virtually – for students and their parents.  Students do not have to have been suspended to attend these classes.

 ATTENDANCE

 High School Attendance Reporting Procedures for Winter/Spring 2021 

 

When students return to in-person/face-to-face (F2F) instruction, please follow the following attendance reporting procedures in PowerSchool.  

 

In-Person (F2F) Students:  

Teachers must take attendance for in-person students daily prior to the end of the class period. Any student who is absent should be marked as an Unexcused Absence (2A) or with an Excused Absence code. 

 

In-Person (F2F) Students should be marked as 1R- Present Off-Site on their remote days.  

 


Quarantined In-Person (F2F) Students:  

In-person (F2F) students who have been exposed to/or have a confirmed case of COVID-19 will be asked to remain home for 14 days. The school nurse will notify school staff of students who need to be quarantined based on public health data. Public health and/or school staff should notify parents if students need to be quarantined. Public health officials are the only designees who can quarantine staff or students.  

 

If the quarantined student:  

can work remotely, student should be provided work to be completed at home and assigned a 1R- Present Off-Site. 

is too ill to work from home, the student should be assigned a 1D – Quarantine. 

 

Unless the teacher is sick, instruction continues to be provided during quarantine.  If the teacher is sick, alternate plans are made to provide instruction to students while the teacher is unavailable.  

 

Remote or Virtual Students:  

Students who are learning remotely should be assigned the 1R - Present Off-Site. Attendance for these students should be taken and updated within the 10-day reporting window.  


Social Emotional Learning


 SEL Professional development. Please make sure you attend these.  We are a SEL Cohort school so these must be attended by all of us.



On Wednesdays, as long as we do not have any student functions on these days, I will allow you to bring your children to the building. This will be allowed up until April 7th. That will be the last day our non-SWGHS children can be in the building.  Please plan/ govern yourselves accordingly.

Dress Code  

  • Jeans with fabric underneath covering holes
  • Joggers/Sweatpants/Athletic leggings acceptable
  • Shorts/dresses not shorter than finger tips or top of knee
  • No sagging pants
  • No pajama pants/slippers
  • Any t-shirts with no inappropriate language, symbols, alcohol/drug, political views (amongst other items), that can cause disruption, or is inappropriate to the education environment.
  • All shirts should have sleeves (no tank tops/muscle shirts) (Be understanding with female dress attire, i.e dresses….)
  • Masks - We require students to refrain from wearing masks that can cause disruption to the education environment.  Some suggestions for acceptable masks; designs with no words, plain in color, Sw logo, etc.
  • Sweatshirts (even with hoods) are acceptable as a primary top – but hoods must stay down while in school
  • No hats
  • No midriffs, “topdriff”, “Backdriff”
  • No transparent clothes

Please encourage your students to bring clear water bottles (since we have water bottle filling stations, Water fountains are closed off, and to encourage car riders as best possible to assist with the limited capacity for buses. 


BELLS

I will NOT have the bells ring on Wednesdays. The “90 minute time frame” starts with the face to face come February 22nd with those who are in front of you.  

The current bell schedule (with lunch bells forthcoming)… we all know this can change.

9:05 – Staff is in room

9:15 – Students allowed in building and right to gym/class

9:55 – 1st block starts

10:05 – late bell

11:30 – 1st block ends

11:35 – 2nd block starts

11:45 – late bell

1:25 – 2nd block ends

            Lunch bells will be added within here (forthcoming)

1:30 - 3rd block starts

1:40 – late bell

2:55 - 3rd block ends

3:00 - 4th block starts

3:10 – late bell

4:25 - 4th block ends

Students MUST exit the campus (athletes are to go to their locations)

4:35 – staff may be dismissed

Note: Please make sure that we do not send students to the front office or attendance office to use the phone if they become sick in their class. Any student stating they do not feel well, must be escorted by an administrator. The administrator or administrative representative will escort the student to the isolation room due to a a process that must take place.

Interim reports were just sent out this past Thursday through e-mail as well. If they did not receive this, please have them e-mail Mrs. Cline to ask her to update their e-mail address so they can receive all electronic information pertaining to their student. Clinek2@gcsnc.com The next e-mailing will occur April 14th (report cards). Please make sure your grades are updated and synced so information is up to date.

CAREER and COLLEGE PROMISE

Career and College Promise offers North Carolina high school students the chance to

earn college credits at a community college campus. The program is tuition-free for high school juniors and seniors (semester fees will be due). You must have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 2.8 or higher or passing test scores.

Students can earn:

·        College credit transferable to all UNC System Institutions and many of NC’s Independent Colleges and Universities

·       A credential, certificate or diploma in a technical career

Important Dates:

Summer 2021 Semester:

·        March 15, 2021:  Priority Deadline for Early Registration

·        May 13, 2021: Deadline to submit new applications

·        June 2, 2021: First Day of 8 week summer classes

·        July 27, 2021: Last day of classes


Fall 2021 Semester:

Admissions Sessions are required for all new students.

1.    Determine your Career and College Promise Pathway –

Write the Pathway name and Code on your Verification Form.  Please refer to the Dual Credit Allowances Document for information on how the high school credits dual courses.

o   Career/Technical Education Pathways – GTCC offers numerous certificate and diploma programs.

2.     Complete the Application Packet (forms are attached). (Signatures may be obtained by email.)

The Application Packet includes:

o   GTCC Application for Admission – Student signature required on page 2.  Please do not include the social security number on the application for admission. 

o   Verification of Student Eligibility Form – Please make sure that you have all signatures required and that you have included the pathway.

o   Attendance Policy Form

o   Year-End High School Transcript – courses must be listed by grade level, signed and dated by principal and include a cumulative unweighted GPA.

Please send a copy of your latest transcript with the admissions packet. If you attend a public high school, you may request this through cfnc.org.  Please provide your High School ID # on the Verification Form. If your transcript is in a sealed envelope, you may open it and scan it. 

o   Copy of Home School State Registration (if applicable)

o   Consent to Release Form – to be completed by the student.

o   Media Release Form – to be completed by the parent.

3.    Scan your application packet and email the documents as attachments using the attach

button to ccp@gtcc.edu. Do not copy and paste the documents into the body of the email.
Once you have submitted your application packet:

o   Please be checking the email listed on your application. If something is missing, you will be notified.  After the application is processed, the applicant will receive an email with Titan Account Activation Instructions.

o   After activating your Titan account, please log into your GTCC Titan Email and check it frequently.  You will receive registration instructions around March 1, 2021. Applicants who apply after March 15, will receive registration instructions after their application is processed.

o   Once you have registered for classes, you will be sent an email with instructions for our mandatory online CCP Orientation.

Please keep in mind that the purpose of CCP is for eligible high school students to earn college credits towards a college degree, diploma, or certificate.

Dual credit for high school graduation requirements is a bonus, but should not be what drives course selection. Courses in the CCP transfer pathways should be selected based on the published bachelor degree plan for the major at the university the student intends to transfer to after high school.

The Guilford Apprenticeship Partners program is still accepting applications.  If you are an interested junior or senior, it’s not too late to apply!

GAP is a four year apprenticeship program with tracks in Manufacturing, Information Technology and Cybersecurity, Automotive, VAC/Electrical/Plumbing.  It’s open to all juniors and seniors who meet the GAP requirements of good attendance and a minimum GPA of 2.5-2.8.
