Week of October 30, 2017

Team -

Thank you for making the 1st quarter fantastic!

With that being said, the end of the quarter was this past Friday, October 27th.

All grades MUST be submitted by Wednesday, Nov. 1st by the end of the day.

Grade changes can be submitted after spreadsheets have been turned in.  Mrs. Cline attached the grade change form in an an e-mail on October 25th that has to be filled out for all grade changes. You will make the change in your gradebook but you have to give Mrs. Cline the form to let her know what you have changed in order for her to store the grade in their historical marks.

You should be entering grades for all students. INC’s are only for students that have had medical issues or students that have been pre-approved by me to receive INC’s.

Students that need to make up time due to too many absences should receive a “55” and use comment code:
56244- A “55” indicates the attendance policy was violated.

To add a comment for an individual student see step #4, to add a comment for the entire class to see step #8.

You will need to print out and give to Mrs. Cline only the Score Sheet which is your spreadsheet with assignments & Final Grade. (screen shots are included in this attachment (10/25 e-mail) so you can see exactly what she is asking for)

Report cards will be printed on Nov. 7th and they will be given to students Wednesday  Nov. 8th.

Great job to everyone (observers and observed) who participated in the walkthoughs this past Wednesday!  We are certainly on the right track with building a collaborative staff here at SWHS!

Thank you for everything you continue to do to make Southwest GREAT!

Week of October 23, 2017

Team -

We are doing so many great things here on the Ranch! Once again, thank you to those who continue to share with the administration what we may not necessarily be seeing.

Have any of you heard our students, parents or even your colleagues talk about the Counseling Center in Mobile unit #5? Have any of you visited the Counseling Center when one of the Special Events are being offered? If not, please do so. Great information and opportunities are coming out of the Counseling Center!  Speaking about counseling, congratulations to Lashana Richards for winning the Fox8 NC State Education Lottery teacher of the week award. She will be highlighted all next week on Fox8!  Great job Lashana!  Also - congratulations to Mark Funderberg for being nominated for employee of the month for GCS.  Let's continue to show the county how special SWHS really is.

Wednesday Walkthroughs continue this Wednesday. Remember, based on the schedule that was created, you are only scheduled to observe once and be observed once over the whole school year. It is certainly encouraged to participate in extra walkthroughs if you desire and if your schedule allows it. Feel free to mention that to Ms. Shaw if you choose to do so.  Remember to check your calendar for your Wednesday Walkthrough dates.

Also - PLCs are mandated every week for EOC classes, and every other for all other classes. Please make sure Ms. Shaw knows when and where you are meeting.

Tutorial Buses started last week. This will continue every Tuesday and Thursday. We have the bells set up to ring at 3:45 and 4:45. Students should not be late to tutorials nor should those who need bus transportation be allowed to leave early. If your student goes to another teacher for tutoring, please make sure you communicate to them. Only the teacher dismissing the student at 4:45 should be providing a pass to the bus.

Ms. Baker has assigned the Saturday Schoools to the SWHS calendar. Saturday School will be held every once a month from 8-Noon in the Media Center. Please notify students of this opportunity to make-up time. If a student will be attending Saturday School, please place all work in the box labeled Saturday School located in the front office teacher's lounge. Within or on the assignment please indicate your name (teacher's name), student's name, if the assignment is to be returned to Ms. Baker, and if the assignment is a test or quiz so that she will know to monitor students. Any teacher that wants to earn comp time and assist Ms. Baker is free to do so. There will be set expectations and rules for students who attend Saturday School.  The expectations are as followed...
  • No eating or drinking.
  • Electronics will be collected at the door during sign in, and any student caught with any electronic devices other than a computer will be asked to leave and may not return the rest of the semester.
  • NO SLEEPING, if caught student will be asked to leave, but may return during the next Saturday School.
  • No talking
-All other Guilford County rules apply-
If you have any further questions you may contact Mr. Miller or Ms. Baker.

Great job with Homecoming week!  Thank you to everyone who participated and/or led any of the activities (Shirt sales, Powder Puff, pep rally, and more.) This is quite an undertaking and please know that everyone's efforts are greatly appreciated! With Homecoming week finishing, it is imperative to get back to the normal structure that our kids thrive on.

Thank you for everything you continue to do to make Southwest GREAT!

Proud Principal,

Week of October 16

Team

Thank you for a great Wednesday with testing. I big thank you to all those who were actively involved in testing as well as to those who were not, yet heard the request to assist with supervising lunches, senior meeting, freshmen service learning opportunities, assisting Ms. Shaw, and more. At a school of this size, this is an overwhelming activity that takes a lot of planning and assistance from everyone to make this day a success. Thank you.

Thank you to those who have reached out to the administrative team brainstorming to continue to make SWHS go from GOOD to GREAT. Without your feedback and your solution driven approaches, this goal would be quite difficult to achieve. Additionally, thank you to those who have inundated the admin team in the last two weeks giving us feedback of the good they see coming out of not only what we have challenged everyone with, but with the observations of their peers that are continuously shared with us.  We have MANY positive things going on at SWHS and we need to continue to ride that wave. With that being said, many of you have heard me speak about the glass half full versus the glass half empty. It truly is the lens in which you choose to look through. While there are many new district initiatives put upon, all with great intent, we are all put in that position to decide how we are going to look at that glass. How do you choose to look at it? How does your lens impact your colleagues? I continue to encourage to remind everyone to see me and discuss any concerns, as well as the positives you see as we move along.

Wednesday Walkthroughs crank up again this Wednesday.

Tutorial Buses start up this week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

This year's first Saturday School will be October 21, 2017 from 8 am-12. Saturday School will be held every once a month.

  • NO SLEEPING, if caught student will be asked to leave, but may return during the next Saturday School.
  • No talking
-All other Guilford County rules apply-
If you have any further questions you may contact Mr. Miller or Ms. Baker.

Homecoming week is upon us. When we provide the students with weeks such as these that causes a change in the typical daily structure, we must respond by being that much more on "our game" to keep necessary behaviors from occurring. Please remember to be in the halls during all transitions, teach bell to bell, confiscate cell phones that are out, eliminate drinks and food in the room and take every opportunity to build relationships with your students. Please remember to pay attention to the spirit days for each day and the schedule for the pep rally on Friday.

First round of evaluations are well under way and should be close to finished for Standard and Comprehensive cycle employees. Each staff member should be reflecting on how we are focused on integrating the EOCs (English 2, Math 1, Biology), and meaningful effort towards reducing the achievement and suspension gap. Additionally, as we have reviewed data for our school, AP and ACT should also be a focus. Thank you to everyone who is embracing this reflection and making a laser light focus on these goals.

Thank you for everything you continue to do to make Southwest GREAT!

Week of October 9th, 2017

Team -

Congratulations to the staff members who won the September GOOD to GREAT awards. These are awards that represent Guilford County Schools beliefs about Teaching and Learning; Growth Mindset (Tinisha Shaw), Consistency (Michelle Meck), Racial Equity (Bruner Rodriguez), Relationship (Guy Shavers), Diversity (Tony Philpott and Julia Duran) and Critical Thinking (Stephanie Powell).  We already see mnay other staff who are leading the charge for the October awards. Keep up the great work!! Additionally, congratulations to Stuart Cox for winning the Horace Mann Crystal Apple Award.  Stuart has demonstrated going above and beyond for his students by taking the initiative to participate in extra peer observation walk thrus, stealing great ideas from colleagues along the way.
Last, a big thank you for everyone who has been  persevering through the challenges put in front of them and being in attendance each day, all day. All individuals that fell in this group had their name put in a hat for a $25 Restaurant.com drawing. This past month's winner was Demario Greene.  We will distribute these awards again the first Wednesday in November. As a side note, the Crystal Apple award will focus on PLCs! Thank you for continuing to move from GOOD to GREAT. I applaud each and every one of you are accepting this challenge.

As a reminder, Wednesday Walkthroughs are on hold due to the PSAT testing for 10th and 11th graders. If you wish to participate in any of these outside of your regularly scheduled walks, feel free to mention that to Ms. Shaw. These pick right back up next Wednesday, October 18th.  Remember to  check your calendar for your Wednesday Walkthrough dates.

Leadership team meeting has been moved from Wednesday AM to Thursday AM due to the PSAT (7:45 Barnum's office).

As you meet your students at your doorway entering your classroom, never hesitate to ask a student to show you their SW spirit shirt. Students are taking more advantage of staff who do not address the code as it was written. Remember, we must be consistent.

Additionally, food and drinks, cell phone, hallway monitoring has been much improved as it relates to consistency. As a friendly reminder, much of this can be eliminated at the door before the students enter. Thank you to everyone who continues to demonstrate consistent managerial practices.

Monday(10/8) is the 2nd interim report distribution day for all students regardless of their grades. Please remember to contact all students who have Ds and Fs!  Last, please make the effort to update grades in PowerSchool weekly.

Seniors will have a senior meeting on Wednesday in the auditorium at 8:45. Upon finishing, these seniors will be released early with the opportunity to visit GTCC for tours, apply for colleges, work on applications and resumes as well as explore career opportunities.

Thank you for everything you continue to do to make Southwest GREAT!
