Thank you for a great Wednesday with testing. I big thank you to all those who were actively involved in testing as well as to those who were not, yet heard the request to assist with supervising lunches, senior meeting, freshmen service learning opportunities, assisting Ms. Shaw, and more. At a school of this size, this is an overwhelming activity that takes a lot of planning and assistance from everyone to make this day a success. Thank you.
Thank you to those who have reached out to the administrative team brainstorming to continue to make SWHS go from GOOD to GREAT. Without your feedback and your solution driven approaches, this goal would be quite difficult to achieve. Additionally, thank you to those who have inundated the admin team in the last two weeks giving us feedback of the good they see coming out of not only what we have challenged everyone with, but with the observations of their peers that are continuously shared with us. We have MANY positive things going on at SWHS and we need to continue to ride that wave. With that being said, many of you have heard me speak about the glass half full versus the glass half empty. It truly is the lens in which you choose to look through. While there are many new district initiatives put upon, all with great intent, we are all put in that position to decide how we are going to look at that glass. How do you choose to look at it? How does your lens impact your colleagues? I continue to encourage to remind everyone to see me and discuss any concerns, as well as the positives you see as we move along.
Wednesday Walkthroughs crank up again this Wednesday. Remember, based on the schedule that was created, you are only scheduled to observe once and be observed once over the whole school year. It is certainly encouraged to participate in extra walkthroughs if you desire and if your schedule allows it. Feel free to mention that to Ms. Shaw if you choose to do so. Remember to check your calendar for your Wednesday Walkthrough dates.
Tutorial Buses start up this week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have the bells set up to ring at 3:45 and 4:45. Students should not be late to tutorials nor should those who need bus transportation be allowed to leave early. If your student goes to another teacher for tutoring, please make sure you communicate to them. Only the teacher dismissing the student at 4:45 should be providing a pass to the bus.
This year's first Saturday School will be October 21, 2017 from 8 am-12. Saturday School will be held every once a month. Please notify students of this opportunity to make-up time. If a student will be attending Saturday School, please place all work in the box labeled Saturday School located in the front office teacher's lounge. Within or on the assignment please indicate your name (teacher's name), student's name, if the assignment is to be returned to Ms. Baker, and if the assignment is a test or quiz so that she will know to monitor students. Any teacher that wants to earn comp time and assist Ms. Baker is free to do so. There will be set expectations and rules for students who attend Saturday School. The expectations are as followed...

Homecoming week is upon us. When we provide the students with weeks such as these that causes a change in the typical daily structure, we must respond by being that much more on "our game" to keep necessary behaviors from occurring. Please remember to be in the halls during all transitions, teach bell to bell, confiscate cell phones that are out, eliminate drinks and food in the room and take every opportunity to build relationships with your students. Please remember to pay attention to the spirit days for each day and the schedule for the pep rally on Friday.
First round of evaluations are well under way and should be close to finished for Standard and Comprehensive cycle employees. Each staff member should be reflecting on how we are focused on integrating the EOCs (English 2, Math 1, Biology), and meaningful effort towards reducing the achievement and suspension gap. Additionally, as we have reviewed data for our school, AP and ACT should also be a focus. Thank you to everyone who is embracing this reflection and making a laser light focus on these goals.
Thank you for everything you continue to do to make Southwest GREAT!
