Week of January 29th

Team -

Thank you to all test coordinators, administrators, proctors, support staff around the campus for making this week as successful as possible. Please be on the lookout for Ms. Shaw's e-mails coming your way about any make up exams still needing to be taken.

The building will be open Saturday and Sunday in the morning and early afternoon for anyone that needs to get some work done.

As a reminder, this Monday, January 29th is the first day of the 2nd semester. Students should report to their homeroom at the 8:35 bell (roughly a 15 minute homeroom). Students who do not have 1st block should arrive roughly 15 minutes prior to their 2nd block class to get their schedule from Ms. Durant, our guidance secretary, who will be outside the front office distributing the most recent schedules.

There will be a five day class schedule change window starting Monday. Friday, February 2nd will be the last day for these requests to occur. Students should drop off request forms to the front office. Students should NOT be sent to the office or counselor if they are requesting a schedule change. The ONLY time a student should be in the front office or counselor's office is if he/she doe snot have a class at that time, or the counselor called him/her in. The student should be directed to fill out a schedule change form, which can be found outside the front office, and return the form and the next earliest convenience, not during class time.

Any students enrolled in Weaver for the 2nd semester will report to Weaver as normal on Monday. AM Weaver students should report to the front of the building and board bus 910, leaving about 8:35, Afternoon Weaver students should be out front at 11:50 and board bus 875.

Tuesday, January 30th, we will conduct Grade level meetings with the students in the auditorium. If you have planning or are supervising a majority of these students in your class, we ask that you come assist with supervision. The schedule is listed below.

Make sure you have reviewed this semester's lunch/morning supervision along with the SWEEPS responsibilities.

The PTSA Walk the schedule night is still scheduled for Monday, February 5th from 6 PM to 7:30 PM starting in the auditorium. This is a wonderful time to meet your students' parents/guardians. There will be a food truck and vendor truck on site to provide a proceed of their sales back to the PTSA.

As a reminder, please make sure you are alerting the student's grade level counselor and administrator if you are nervous about a student failing your class. Additionally, please remind students of their make up time responsibilities and any work that needs to be made up.

Week of January 22

Team -

So much for that less than one inch of snow forecast! Please know I appreciate everyone paying attention to the daily closing and testing update communications and responding to any parents or students.

As a reminder, this Monday, January 22nd is a regular school day for staff and students. Please take advantage of Monday with using students who have already completed all their exams by assisting their peers in preparation for upcoming state exams. State exams will now start on Tuesday, January 23rd with 2nd block exam.  3rd block exam will occur on Wednesday, 4th block on Thursday and 1st block on Friday. These state exam days will end at 1:05 for dismissal.  Monday, January 29th is currently scheduled for a make up exam day. Students should be in dress code for all exams and will not be allowed to take their exam if out of dress code.

Any students who have GTCC classes on the day of state exams can be released ONLY after the exam is finished in the room. If he/she finishes, they must wait until the whole class is complete.

The PTSA Walk the schedule night is still scheduled for Monday, February 5th from 6 PM to 7:30 PM starting in the auditorium. This is a wonderful time to meet your child's 2nd semester teachers. There will be a food truck and vendor truck on site to provide a proceed of their sales back to the PTSA.

Thank you for being patient again this past week as GCS maintenance continues to address the heating issues around parts of our building. We will continue to be persistent on this issue until it gets resolved. The change with temperatures outside are certainly not helping us. As we come upon a warm week, we will make sure all boilers are cut off.
As a reminder, please make sure you are alerting the student's grade level counselor and administrator if you are nervous about a student failing your class. Additionally, please remind students of their make up time responsibilities and any work that needs to be made up.

Week of January 16th

Team -

I hope each of you have enjoyed your 3 day weekend!

On August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood before a crowd of civil rights supporters and admonished racial inequality, discrimination and social injustice.  Dr. King’s 17-minute  “I Have a Dream,” speech is one of the most recognizable public addresses that spoke volumes, and in turn, gave a movement even more momentum.

Monday, we observe the celebration of Dr. King’s life.

Thank you for being patient again this past week as GCS maintenance continues to address the heating issues around parts of our building. We will continue to be persistent on this issue until it gets resolved. The change with temperatures outside are certainly not helping us.

Non state exams in blocks 2/4 are to be given on Tuesday. If you haven't already, please make sure you are communicating this to your parents and students. This day is a regular school day. Exempting the exams on this day does not excuse any student from school on this day, however, students do not have to attend school during the five state exam days in which their class would have been scheduled. Please work with your neighbors and/or teammates if you are needing any students to be supervised while providing your exams during the Tuesday non state exam blocks. This is a perfect opportunity for students to be studying for other exams, or even making up any work if necessary. The state exam schedule, Wednesday, January 17th to Monday, January 22nd will test blocks 1-4 for all state exams, followed by make up exam day on Tuesday, January 23rd. Wednesday, January 24th will be the first day of the 2nd semester. The state exam days will end at 1:05 for dismissal. If you have ANY students staying after with you and need transportation, please make sure Mr. Miller knows so he can communicate with transportation. Students should be in dress code for all exams and will NOT be allowed to take their exam if out of dress code.

Any students who have GTCC classes on the day of state exams can be released ONLY after the exam is finished in the room. If he/she finishes, they must wait until the whole class is complete.

As a reminder, please make sure you are alerting the student's grade level counselor and administrator if you are nervous about a student failing your class. Additionally, please remind students of their make up time responsibilities and any work that needs to be made up.

The remainder of the testing exam schedule is as followed:

Tuesday, January 16 - Blocks 2 and 4 will test teacher made exams. 1 and 3 are regular classes
Note - Class times will be adjusted slightly for the exam classes

Wednesday, January 17 - Block 1 (Day ends at 1:05)

Week of January 8

Team -

Thank you for being patient this past week as GCS maintenance continues to address the heating issues around parts of our building. I spoke to the Chief Operations Officer, Scott McCully Saturday morning and he is aware of SWHS and we are on his radar. If you are still having heat issues (too cold or too hot), please inform Dr. Monell even if you think I am aware.

A big thank you to everyone who came out Saturday to pitch in with EOC Bootcamps and NCFE tutorials. This opportunity always proves to be beneficial to the students when it comes to the results of the exams.

Only FULL instructional days left and two of these include non state exams with blocks 1/3 non state exams on Friday January 11th followed by blocks 2/4 exams on Tuesday. This was recently changed due to the day off on January 4th. Please make sure you are communicating this to your parents and students. These two days are regular school days. Exempting the exams on these two days do not excuse any student from school on these days, however, students do not have to attend school during the five state exam days in which their class would have been scheduled. Please work with your neighbors and/or teammates if you are needing any students to be supervised while providing your exams during the Friday/Tuesday non state exam blocks. This is a perfect opportunity for students to be studying for other exams, or even making up any work if necessary. The state exam schedule, Wednesday, January 17th to Monday, January 22nd will test blocks 1-4 for all state exams, followed by make up exam day on the 23rd. Wednesday, January 24th will be the first day of the 2nd semester. The state exam days will end at 1:05 for dismissal. Testing exam is as followed:

Friday, January 12 - Blocks 1 and 3 will test teacher made exams. 2 and 4 are regular classes
Tuesday, January 16 - Blocks 2 and 4 will test teacher made exams. 1 and 3 are regular classes
Note - Class times will be adjusted slightly for the exam classes

Thursday, January 19 - Block 3 (Day ends at 1:05)
Friday, January 20 - Block 4 (Day ends at 1:05)
Monday, January 23 - Make up exam day

Exam exemptions can only be used on non state exams, Friday 1/12 and Tuesday, 1/16. Exam exemptions will be distributed on Tuesday, January 9th in the cafeteria during all lunches for 10th-12th. Freshman exemption cards will be distributed that morning in the Freshman Gym. In order to earn an exemption card, the student must be in attendance 97% for the entire semester and without any unexcused absences.  Please share this schedule and process with your students.

Please share through your distribution lists, the College Prep/Athletic Ambition event that takes place on Saturday from 9-12 in the auditorium. Former SWHS students will share there very recent experiences and what they wished they would have done differently as well as take any questions. Wonderful opportunity!

As we finish these past few days exams, let's be reminded to teach bell to bell, not allow students to use the restroom in the beginning or end of instruction, remind students to use the cafeteria bathroom during lunch, do not dismiss students from any class early, do not use class time for fundraising collections, etc.
