Week of February 26

Team -

Congratulations to the men's and women's basketball teams for giving yet again another fantastic season!  Please assist me in expressing this to the coaches and players.  A big thank you and congratulations to the advisors and students for putting on a fantastic Black History program Thursday evening. If you missed this event, please make sure you try to attend next year's event.

Please spread this event by communicating to your students, e-mailing your distribution lists, etc.... This coming Thursday evening, we have Junior night. We expect to see all parents of Juniors at this event at 6:00 pm in the auditorium. College readiness, preparing for college, Say Yes as well as see representatives from Guilford College, UNCG, other local universities and more will be presented! In addition, we have  a wonderful opportunity to hear from parents and students regarding their personal journeys of drug and alcohol addiction in a following presentation. Any questions related to this topic will be able to be answered by experts form Drug and Alcohol services, Counselors, Insight, and Youth Focus.  You certainly do not want to miss these events and feel free to bring a friend.

Staff, hopefully your department chairs have shared with you the amazing things/resources coming our way at SWHS. We have over $8,000 of funding being used for private tutoring working collaboratively with both Math 1 and English 2. We have purchased 6 more interactive projectors to be installed in classrooms before the year ends. This will open up 6 LCD projectors. We spent an additional $1,000 on calculators for the math department. Furthermore, we have acquired over $100,000 is resources without spending a dime of our own money. We have Achieve3000, a $16,000 program that English 2 teachers will be working with but will be available for any teachers who have 10th graders in their classroom. We acquired Math 1 teacher support by a company called The National Training Network. They will be working with the Math 1 teachers on data analysis, modeling in the classroom, PLCs, and more (more than $10,000 in support). We acquired 4 new copiers in the ballpark of roughly $16,000, 3 laptop charging carts and 78 laptops arriving within the next 6 weeks worth $45,000. I have met with GCS Safety and Security to get our front doors on a magnetic door lock with surveillance system ($5,000 +/-), and have advocated to get both sets of doors on this system, as I believe we have two "front" entrances for our school. I am hoping this is completed before the end of July. Additionally, we have a family who is willing to contribute up to $30,000 matching anyone's dollar for their dollar. We are hoping this will bring $60,000 into the school where $1 dollar out of every $3 will be spent on technology and the remaining $2 will be spent on Safety/Security.  One of the first technology purchases will be installing an interact smart projector in the Media Center that will allow skyping to occur from around the world. Safety/security meetings for the community and staff will be forthcoming which will hopefully drive the total of $60,000 even further.  I hope each of you is as excited as I am. The staff of SWHS and our students are deserving of this and more!

Another reminder as we start approaching the end of the year, GCS is expecting all staff to attend HS Graduation ceremonies and be in regalia. With this expectation, I will provide a FULL day of comp time that can be used for NEXT school year. The Graduation date for SWHS is Saturday, June 16 at 9:00 AM at the Greensboro Coliseum. More information will follow. It is expected that staff have the same expectations as students when it comes to dress attire. In other words, shorts, loafers, tank tops, hats would not be considered appropriate. For those of you that were at graduation last year, it really was a beautiful thing to see and recognize the staff for all that they do in front of 5000 people. You all deserve this at the very least.

This Tuesday, February 27th, we are conducting the ACT exam for all Juniors. Seniors will have cap and gowns distributed as well as review the updated graduation calendar. They will be released for the day after the meeting. Sophomores will go over class rings that morning in the auditorium. Both Sophomore and Freshmen classes will be involved in a service learning presentation as well as participate in a homelessness activity (PLEASE REVIEW LISA WHITESTONE'S E-MAILS). Senior homeroom teachers are asked to assist with this event since seniors have been dismissed. ALL 9th and 10th graders will be able to acquire service learning hours during this day. A specific schedule has been dsitirbuted by Lisa Whitestone going over specifics of the activity. Teachers of 9th, 10th and 12th grade homerooms may have a little homework to handle in order for the activities on this day to be successful.

Week of February 19

Team -

A reminder that tomorrow is a regular school day, a make up day from previous inclement weather days so we look forward to seeing all students and staff at school on Monday.

Unfortunately, this past week, our nation experienced another tragic event at a school that resulted in the loss of life. When we at Southwest put systems in place, it is to minimize ,hopefully eliminating these scenarios from occurring at our school. I can assure you as the Principal at SWHS, I am in conversation about providing more resources into our school to increase the safety and security for everyone on our campus. With that being said, I need your help. Please review your safety plans, take them serious, review them with your students often, provide clarity to your substitutes on where these plans on and makes sure they are easily understood. Check passes in the hallways (look at the time and dates), provide passes for students leaving your class, consistently uphold the expectations we continue to address on a daily basis.   Consistency, consistency, consistency.
A huge congratulations to the SWHS Men's Wrestling team. Leading the way with Deven Snyder as a state champion, followed by Caleb Smith, Ruther Oxce finishing in 3rd, and Andrew Chu finishing 5th in their respective weight classes. Great job and way to represent!

Another huge congratulations to the SWHS Cowgirls Basketball program for winning the conference tournament this past Friday versus Mt. Tabor. Way to go ladies!

We have a couple of exciting events coming up this week; Men's and Women's basketball both play at home on Tuesday. Please come out and assist us in cheering on both our cowgirls and cowboys as they prepare to wreck havoc in the state tournament. Games start at 6 and 7:30 PM. Also - this Thursday at 7pm in the auditorium, we have a Black History Month presentation that starts at 7 pm. Tickets are only $2. If you had the opportunity to see last year's event, you now know you don't want to miss this year's!

A reminder as we start approaching the end of the year, I must inform you that GCS is  expecting all staff to attend HS Graduation ceremonies and be in regalia. With this expectation, I will provide a FULL day of comp time that can be used for NEXT school year. The Graduation date for SWHS is Saturday, June 16 at 9:00 AM at the Greensboro Coliseum. You all deserve this at the very least.

The SWHS PTSA is holding a soup and salad luncheon for you this coming Friday. Please go to Michelle Lovett's classroom during your lunch time on Friday, enjoy the soup and salad as well as the company of your colleagues.  If you do not have planning 3rd block and have lunch supervision on Friday, please work with your lunchtime administrator so you can go enjoy this meal.

Week of February 5

Team -

Congratulations to Angela Hagler on winning the SWHS Teacher of the Year award!  Also -many shout outs go out to all the staff members who were nominated for this year's voting process.

It's National Counselor's week, February 5th-9th!

In a time when High School students are trying to find out what their future will hold, the role of the school counselor is vital. I have the honor in working so close to the counselors in the front office as well as having worked alongside Ms. Compton in the Freshman Academy in previous years. Unfortunately, more often than not, every staff member in this building may not get recognized for their efforts simply because it is "behind the scenes". I can assure everyone that the counselors are performing MANY behind the scenes tasks that simply do not get recognized. Their role is far more than just basic scheduling, and responding to student emotions. On a daily basis, I watch the counselors combing through student transcripts, making sure they are on track, or revising their schedule based on their needs. They are meeting with individual students about college interests, assisting parents with questions surrounding financial aid, exploring a variety of colleges for these students, or even seeking outside resources that can help parents become more educated and better advocates for their children. They are wanting to be that buffer between the teacher and administration when it comes to students not being academically or behaviorally successful in the classroom. They are offering interventions and/or strategies to students and teachers rather than the student be instantly removed form instruction.  They are each responsible for 400+/- students. As you can tell, I can go on and on because, truly, I have barely scratched the surface with what they do. I am proud to be the Principal at a High School who has the best counseling team around. Please help me in giving a shout out to any counselor who has helped you, a parent or any student in being a better member of this school.

Note: The impact of a school counselor is dramatic.According to National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) study findings, 12th graders who talked about their future plans with a school counselor were:
  • 6.8 times more likely to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • 3.2 times more likely to attend college
  • Two times more likely to attend a bachelor’s degree program

Monday, February 5th is the PTSA walk the Scheduled Night from 6-7:30, starting in the auditorium. Please send a reminder to your e-mail distribution lists about this event. There will be a food Truck out in front of the school, Food Freaks stuffed hamburgers starting around 5PM if you need to get some dinner prior to the event. 10% of all purchases will go back to the PTSA. Also, we are doing a supply drive to help offset some of your purchases during the school years. The more money we can save, the quicker we can spend more money on the technological needs of the school.

Tuesday, February 6th, we will conduct grade level meetings with the students in the auditorium. If you have planning or are supervising a majority of these students in your class, we ask that you come assist with supervision. The schedule is listed below.

9th grade - 8:50 - 9:30
10th grade - 9:35 - 10:10
12th grade - 10:20 - 10:55

You will make the change in your gradebook but you have to give her the form to let her know what you have changed so she can store the grades which will update student’s transcript.

This coming Saturday, February 10 is one last opportunity for students to make up time to be applied to the 2nd quarter. It will be 8-12 in the Media Center.

As we start approaching the end of the year, I must inform you that GCS is now expecting all staff to attend HS Graduation ceremonies and be in regalia. The Graduation date for SWHS is Saturday, June 16 at 9:00 AM at the Greensboro Coliseum. More information will follow.

Please make sure we are starting the semester off with high expectations and are maintaining those expectations all the way through to the end of the year. This includes all supervision responsibilities outside of the classroom. Consistency, consistency, consistency.

As a reminder, please make sure you are alerting the student's grade level counselor and administrator if you are nervous about a student failing your class. Additionally, please remind students of their make up time responsibilities and any work that needs to be made up.

As a reminder the building will always be open on Sunday from roughly 7-1 due to Piedmont Chapel church.
