Week of February 26

Team -

Congratulations to the men's and women's basketball teams for giving yet again another fantastic season!  Please assist me in expressing this to the coaches and players.  A big thank you and congratulations to the advisors and students for putting on a fantastic Black History program Thursday evening. If you missed this event, please make sure you try to attend next year's event.

Please spread this event by communicating to your students, e-mailing your distribution lists, etc.... This coming Thursday evening, we have Junior night. We expect to see all parents of Juniors at this event at 6:00 pm in the auditorium. College readiness, preparing for college, Say Yes as well as see representatives from Guilford College, UNCG, other local universities and more will be presented! In addition, we have  a wonderful opportunity to hear from parents and students regarding their personal journeys of drug and alcohol addiction in a following presentation. Any questions related to this topic will be able to be answered by experts form Drug and Alcohol services, Counselors, Insight, and Youth Focus.  You certainly do not want to miss these events and feel free to bring a friend.

Staff, hopefully your department chairs have shared with you the amazing things/resources coming our way at SWHS. We have over $8,000 of funding being used for private tutoring working collaboratively with both Math 1 and English 2. We have purchased 6 more interactive projectors to be installed in classrooms before the year ends. This will open up 6 LCD projectors. We spent an additional $1,000 on calculators for the math department. Furthermore, we have acquired over $100,000 is resources without spending a dime of our own money. We have Achieve3000, a $16,000 program that English 2 teachers will be working with but will be available for any teachers who have 10th graders in their classroom. We acquired Math 1 teacher support by a company called The National Training Network. They will be working with the Math 1 teachers on data analysis, modeling in the classroom, PLCs, and more (more than $10,000 in support). We acquired 4 new copiers in the ballpark of roughly $16,000, 3 laptop charging carts and 78 laptops arriving within the next 6 weeks worth $45,000. I have met with GCS Safety and Security to get our front doors on a magnetic door lock with surveillance system ($5,000 +/-), and have advocated to get both sets of doors on this system, as I believe we have two "front" entrances for our school. I am hoping this is completed before the end of July. Additionally, we have a family who is willing to contribute up to $30,000 matching anyone's dollar for their dollar. We are hoping this will bring $60,000 into the school where $1 dollar out of every $3 will be spent on technology and the remaining $2 will be spent on Safety/Security.  One of the first technology purchases will be installing an interact smart projector in the Media Center that will allow skyping to occur from around the world. Safety/security meetings for the community and staff will be forthcoming which will hopefully drive the total of $60,000 even further.  I hope each of you is as excited as I am. The staff of SWHS and our students are deserving of this and more!

Another reminder as we start approaching the end of the year, GCS is expecting all staff to attend HS Graduation ceremonies and be in regalia. With this expectation, I will provide a FULL day of comp time that can be used for NEXT school year. The Graduation date for SWHS is Saturday, June 16 at 9:00 AM at the Greensboro Coliseum. More information will follow. It is expected that staff have the same expectations as students when it comes to dress attire. In other words, shorts, loafers, tank tops, hats would not be considered appropriate. For those of you that were at graduation last year, it really was a beautiful thing to see and recognize the staff for all that they do in front of 5000 people. You all deserve this at the very least.

This Tuesday, February 27th, we are conducting the ACT exam for all Juniors. Seniors will have cap and gowns distributed as well as review the updated graduation calendar. They will be released for the day after the meeting. Sophomores will go over class rings that morning in the auditorium. Both Sophomore and Freshmen classes will be involved in a service learning presentation as well as participate in a homelessness activity (PLEASE REVIEW LISA WHITESTONE'S E-MAILS). Senior homeroom teachers are asked to assist with this event since seniors have been dismissed. ALL 9th and 10th graders will be able to acquire service learning hours during this day. A specific schedule has been dsitirbuted by Lisa Whitestone going over specifics of the activity. Teachers of 9th, 10th and 12th grade homerooms may have a little homework to handle in order for the activities on this day to be successful.

Reminder: The building will always be open on Sunday from roughly 7-1 due to Piedmont Chapel church.
