Week of February 19

Team -

A reminder that tomorrow is a regular school day, a make up day from previous inclement weather days so we look forward to seeing all students and staff at school on Monday.

Unfortunately, this past week, our nation experienced another tragic event at a school that resulted in the loss of life. When we at Southwest put systems in place, it is to minimize ,hopefully eliminating these scenarios from occurring at our school. I can assure you as the Principal at SWHS, I am in conversation about providing more resources into our school to increase the safety and security for everyone on our campus. With that being said, I need your help. Please review your safety plans, take them serious, review them with your students often, provide clarity to your substitutes on where these plans on and makes sure they are easily understood. Check passes in the hallways (look at the time and dates), provide passes for students leaving your class, consistently uphold the expectations we continue to address on a daily basis.   Consistency, consistency, consistency.
A huge congratulations to the SWHS Men's Wrestling team. Leading the way with Deven Snyder as a state champion, followed by Caleb Smith, Ruther Oxce finishing in 3rd, and Andrew Chu finishing 5th in their respective weight classes. Great job and way to represent!

Another huge congratulations to the SWHS Cowgirls Basketball program for winning the conference tournament this past Friday versus Mt. Tabor. Way to go ladies!

We have a couple of exciting events coming up this week; Men's and Women's basketball both play at home on Tuesday. Please come out and assist us in cheering on both our cowgirls and cowboys as they prepare to wreck havoc in the state tournament. Games start at 6 and 7:30 PM. Also - this Thursday at 7pm in the auditorium, we have a Black History Month presentation that starts at 7 pm. Tickets are only $2. If you had the opportunity to see last year's event, you now know you don't want to miss this year's!

A reminder as we start approaching the end of the year, I must inform you that GCS is  expecting all staff to attend HS Graduation ceremonies and be in regalia. With this expectation, I will provide a FULL day of comp time that can be used for NEXT school year. The Graduation date for SWHS is Saturday, June 16 at 9:00 AM at the Greensboro Coliseum. More information will follow. It is expected that staff have the same expectations as students when it comes to dress attire. In other words, shorts, loafers, tank tops, hats would not be considered appropriate. For those of you that were at graduation last year, it really was a beautiful thing to see and recognize the staff for all that they do in front of 5000 people. You all deserve this at the very least.

The SWHS PTSA is holding a soup and salad luncheon for you this coming Friday. Please go to Michelle Lovett's classroom during your lunch time on Friday, enjoy the soup and salad as well as the company of your colleagues.  If you do not have planning 3rd block and have lunch supervision on Friday, please work with your lunchtime administrator so you can go enjoy this meal.

This Wednesday, February 21st, all students will be in homeroom up to 9:30. The Junior class will be doing their Pre-administration for the ACT. Here is Wednesday's schedule:

They will be released for the day after the meeting. Sophomores will go over class rings that morning. Both Sophomore and Freshmen classes will be involved in a service learning presentation as well as participate in a homelessness activity. Senior homeroom teachers are asked to assist with this event since seniors have been dismissed. ALL 9th and 10th graders will be able to acquire service learning hours during this day. A specific schedule will be forthcoming later this week and Lisa Whitestone will be sending an e-mail going over specifics of the activity. Teachers of 9th, 10th and 12th grade homerooms may have a little homework to handle in order for the activities on this day to be successful.
