What a great first week! Thank you for everything you have done to contribute to the first 5 days that I truly believe have been fabulous. Please enjoy the rest of your long weekend and I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday! Reminder that we have our faculty meeting on Wednesday, September 5th form 8:00-8:30.
In addition to a great start on our campus, finding out that the efforts of our staff, students, and community being recognized at the State of the Community for Greensboro as the Hubert Humphrey Improvement Funds Award winner for the first time ever at Southwest Guilford High School is something we all should be proud of. The request for funds was written to assist us with issues surrounding the gap. More information is forthcoming.

Thank you to everyone who has come by and visited not only myself, but the admin team and Ms. Shaw to discuss student enrollment in classes, particularly Honors and AP classes. We all know by now that we should be operating in "crisis mode" when it comes to looking at the gap particularly in higher level classes between the majority and minority. The issue is that we have some "qualified" minority students who belong in either Honors or AP classes and they are feeling discouraged after being in classes during only our first few days of school. We are losing out on MANY students who are more than capable in Honors and AP. Let's be cautious that we don't discourage rather than encourage.
Dress Code is in full effect. Great job enforcing the dress code during the first week!
As a reminder, students arriving before 8:10 should either report to the freshmen gym if they are 9th graders or wait in the front atrium if they are upperclassmen. Obviously there are exceptions to this such as being in Jazz Band zero block, meeting with teachers for tutorials, clubs, etc. Please understand we had to make this decision since the official start time for staff is 8:15. Thank you for understanding this additional measure we put in place for the safety of all individuals who arrive to our campus. As a reminder from the e-mail I sent to the staff Friday afternoon, when the 8:10 bell rings, students can spread out down the entire main hallway. They can go to the cafeteria as well. Students should not be roaming any part of the D building, A building, upstairs and downstairs C halls (where classes are), etc.
Grading - Please make sure you are calling families on the students who have been demonstrating some difficulties early on.Even when Parent Assist starts back up in a week, let's not rely solely on the computer to communicate grades and absences.
Teachers and Support Staff - Please go to your NCED cloud/True North Logic accounts and complete the Self Assessment and the Orientation activities. This self assessment is in the PDP container. The Orientation is in the observation container
DO NOT start your PDP until we guide you on the School system/School wide goals.

If you see any students, simply ask where they are going….
Responses that are acceptable: to see a teacher for testing, homework, tutoring…
to the media center.
Not acceptable…. To drop their bag off in a classroom,
walking the halls, to use the bathroom (Note: there are bathrooms on the main
halls)
This will take all staff on
board to let students know they are not hanging out anywhere they want in the
building or roaming the campus before the 8:35 bell. If we continue to allow this to happen, we are is just asking for
potential issues down the road. Thank
you for reinforcing and understanding. I appreciate you all using your best
judgement during this process.

Reminders:
- Make sure you are in connection with any parents about their child's grades especially since Parent Assist/PowerSchool will not be available until 9/11.
