Week of Spring break

Staff,

Thank you so much for all you are doing during this time. Please know I understand how difficult this is on you and I applaud you for your continuous efforts delivering instruction to your students while ALSO practicing self care. I also love seeing your faces from virtual meetings, even screenshots of your meetings. Please take a BREAK during Spring break. You all deserve it! I miss you all very much!

Last week, there was an article published in the news and record about seniors getting pass/fail grades along with other things to finish the school year. A grading committee has been formed in GCS, so there is at least a group of individuals who are sharing thoughts on how to proceed based on the state's restrictions.  As soon as I continue to get more specifics, you know me, I will get this information directly to you. I do not rely on the news, or hearsay,  as this information can often muddy the waters.

Below is what I am sharing with parents this weekend:

"I hope this message finds you well. At this time, all of your students should be engaged with their teachers’ instruction. We have the ability to see your student's’ activity and at this time, we see only 10% of our student body disengaged. Thank you to the 90% who are continuing their studies as expected.  While we are still waiting on additional clarifications on the state’s Pass/Fail for seniors, it is still important for all seniors to be continuing their work as their studies will impact their future. Seniors who were failing as of March 16 need to communicate with their teachers to continue working and get that grade up or else they are in jeopardy of graduating on June 5.  For underclassmen, there has yet to be a decision on whether a numerical grade will be assigned, so please know it is vital for all students to be involved in their studies as their grades, if numerical, may end up being applied to their GPA, and cumulative credits towards graduation.

Additionally, the state has yet to waive the NCFEs so this is yet another reason for all students regardless of their grade to stay on their studies. I am sure we will find out more on this in the near future. AP exams are now finalized and are being communicated to you via your counselor and teacher. The format in how they are delivered will be different but will occur."

This week, Mrs. Cutler has been providing Mrs. French with a report on student activity in Canvas. Mrs. French has then followed up with a connect ed to all of those students who have been disengaged. Hopefully this assists you in your efforts to motivate students getting online.

Please use the below form link form for the Student Support team to monitor and assist you in motivating students' engagement.

Weekly Canvas Student Engagement Form
Teachers complete this form weekly, please only fill out for students that are inconsistent with engagement on Canvas.

I will be providing a NEW link to fill out regarding work verification. It will be a link that you only use for that week, with a new link sent each Monday morning. Be on the lookout Monday! It will be sent the morning of April 13th. This is a form to fill out daily that week. Due to the overload, I will send a new form each Monday.

Administration has started their Canvas and web page walkthroughs. I love seeing and hearing about all the positive and hard work you all have put forward!  You are the best!!  If you have any questions or concerns or need to be reassured with what you are doing, simply contact anyone from the admin team (this includes Mrs. Cutler).

Below is a reminder from Mrs. Cutler to assist you as we continue to learn how to navigate with e-learning. Any questions should be directed to Mrs. Cutler.

Week of March 23

Staff,

First and foremost, I am so proud of you meeting this challenge and doing everything you can, especially learning all the various ways to meet kids' needs during this pandemic.

I want you to think of something as we approach Monday.... Think of this as training for a long marathon....  you would NEVER start off on day 1 with 26 miles. Maybe 1 mile, maybe 2, but certainly not 5 or more. This would not be healthy, not only for your sake, but for the students' sake as well. They are training for this "marathon" as well. Keep that in mind. Do not OVER "train". Stay healthy please!

I REALLY want you to focus on staying well, exercising as best possible during these times. Your mental health is also extremely important to me. If you feel like your stress and anxiety is escalating to a point that you are concerned, please feel free to call me. I want to know if I can clarify something better to you to ease how you are feeling, or just be there for you. Again, my number is 336-442-4374. Try to text me first followed by your phone call. If I don't answer, send me another text, and I will get back to you, I promise. I HAVE YOUR BACK!!!

Please understand we may deal with a lot of internet issues, especially with Canvas, with the mass amount of people trying to access this. I know GCS is working on improving their network, and I am sure outside providers will be doing the same as well.

Below is a guide to assist you as we continue to learn how to navigate with e-learning. Start easy. Any questions should be directed to Mrs. Cutler.

Week of March 16

Team,

Please make sure you are connected as best possible to important social media sites with Southwest (if possible, either Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, as well as Guilford County Schools' social media). It seems to be that Facebook is the most used social media platform.

Here is the most updated communication from GCS:

COVID-19 UPDATE (Mar. 12, 2020; 6:50pm): GCS announced several new protocols to help limit the spread of COVID-19. The district made the changes as state officials announced the virus had spread to more North Carolina counties.
Effective Friday, March 13, GCS is:
Postponing and/or cancelling school and district events of 100 people or more such as concerts, plays, theater productions, dances and assemblies

Canceling all student field trips and travel.
Restricting visitor and volunteer access to schools to parents or guardians only.
Read more here: http://bit.ly/2IIwqMd

A reminder of my announcement I made and sent to staff via e-mail.

I will continue to update everyone on where Southwest Guilford High Stands as it relates to the coronavirus. It is extremely important for you all to be on our facebook, twitter, or Instagram page, as well as all Guilford County Schools’ social media outlets, as well as listen to Guilford county schools as well as any Southwest connect ed messages. Please remind your parents of the importance to listen to these messages fully. If your parents are not getting these messages they must update their number to our data manager, Mrs. Kristy Cline immediately.   You may have heard that Northern Guilford and Gateway have closed. It is only confirmed at this time that they are cleaning their buildings out of precaution. The Health department still has not confirmed any cases in Guilford County.
At this time here is where we stand:
There are no large extra curricular gatherings with any school related events.
All clubs will not meet at this time
Visitors and volunteers to schools will be restricted except to parents and guardians. Parents and guardians will only be allowed to visit students in the front office.
No one outside of students and staff will be allowed in any classroom
All meetings that involve parents, such as conferences, PTSA booster clubs, etc should meet online only. All field trips even to neighboring schools are canceled
All athletics will be suspended as of midnight tonight through April 6.
Staff – no deliveries of meals for your lunch please.
Parents should make every effort to prepare students’ lunches before school and not deliver them to school.
As a reminder, the coronivarus pandemic is by nature unpredictable. Our plans and communications  will continue to change as new information and additional guidance are received from public health experts. Continue to refrain from any information that has not been shared by either myself, Guilford County Schools, The Guilford Health Department as well as the state of North Carolina.
Students who paid for the SAT and are attending tomorrow, Saturday, is still on.
Please make sure you have all communications through social media and phone numbers updated so you can be in the know at all times
If we do close, the school system is currently working on online as well as other means to provide you with ongoing academics.
I am very proud of our staff and students along with their families for refraining from passing inaccurate information. You all are the best!

Week of March 9

Team,

First and foremost, a gentle reminder to move your clocks forward this weekend!

Below are guidelines that we should all be following as well as reminding our students. Also - please know I nave purchased extra sanitizer and dispensers to place around the school in the main areas to assist with keeping our hands sanitized. Guilford County Schools will also be sending extra dispensers and sanitizer our way.

The guidelines below are to assist school personnel in identifying and assessing the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in sick students and staff when Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health school nurse personnel are not present.

How do you identify students and staff who may be sick with or have been exposed to Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)?
If the sick student has a history of:
·         International travel in the past 14 days or
·         Exposure to or close contact with a person known to be ill with 2019-nCoV and
the sick student has fever or symptoms of lower respiratory illness (cough or shortness of breath), they may     have 2019-nCoV.

If both exposure and illness are present, isolate the student.
·         Isolate the student in a private room or in a separate area.
·         Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) – facemask and gloves.
·         Place a facemask on the student.

Check the sick student’s symptoms.
·         Is fever present? (over 100 degrees) measured _______
·         Is respiratory illness present?  cough ____ shortness of breath ____

Contact the School Nurse immediately to report at-risk students and their symptoms.

Guidance will be provided by the Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health.

To prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses, including 2019-nCoV:
·         Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating and after blowing the nose, coughing or sneezing.
·         Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol if soap and water are not available.

·         Stay at home if sick.

It’s Registration Time!  The 2020-21 school year is quickly approaching.  Students are now  meeting with their school counselor between February 24th through April 17th  to review their course requests and prepare for next school year.
