Week of March 5

Team -

This week is Social Worker appreciation week! Please show your appreciation to our very own Michelle Phillips. We are privileged to have Michelle on the Ranch as she handles so many behind the scenes tasks that contribute to the success we see day in and day out. Whether she is coordinating 504s, visiting homes, coaching students towards graduation, assisting students and families in need, developing programs on our campus that will assist students, counseling students, assisting staff members, and more. It is an honor to have such a dedicated Social Worker as Michelle Phillips on our team. Please assist me in showing our appreciation for everything she does for SWHS.
For seniors, Herff Jones will be back on SWHS’s campus on Monday, March 5 during lunches to work with seniors who either:
  1. Failed to pick up their cap and gown.
  2. Are having problems with their cap and gown.
  3. Anything dealing with supplies for graduation.
This Tuesday, March 6th, is our Rising Freshmen visit during the school day followed by the parents of Rising Freshmen curriculum night from 5:30 - 7:00 starting in the auditorium and ending in the freshmen gym. You should have e-mails from Mr. Miller about how you wil be needed, or your stduents. Please share this event with all of your friends who have rising freshmen coming to SWHS next year. The Middle School/High School performance will follow immediately thereafter and there will be a Food Truck on site, Food Freaks Stuffed Hamburger truck for dinner if you are interested.

It’s Registration Time!  GCS has transitioned to using the online registration system via PowerSchool.  This means that teachers input their course recommendations for students into PowerSchool and when students register for classes they see the recommendations that have been made.  It is extremely important that ALL Core (Math, English, Science, & Social Studies) teachers input recommendations for students.  You will find instructions on how to use the recommendation system in an e-mail sent on 2/27 at 11:40am.  GCS requires us to use this system.  If you have questions please ask the grade level counselor or Mrs. Cline.
The teacher recommendation window will be open March 1-March 6.  The registration window for students will open on March 7-March 16.  Please keep in mind that all of the students that you have had in your classes this school year need to have a recommendation in the system.

This coming Thursday is the 2nd interim report for the 3rd quarter. Please make sure you provide a report to every child in every one of your classes.

This coming Friday is PTSA Chic Fila day for SWHS. Whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner, please visit them for a meal or remind your driving students to stop by , place an order and simply mention SWHS so a portion of the proceeds come right back to the school.

The past couple of weeks, I am sure we continue to have that similar topic on our mind, and that is safety in our school. Dr. Contreras sent us all a message about safety and security. You will find what I am sharing with you is very similar in language to her e-mail. Some of you have had very in depth conversations with me about the safety and security of our school and I know you are on board with us to do whatever it takes to make sure we are as safe as possible at Southwest Guilford High School. As I have mentioned either in faculty meetings or through your department chairs, we have a donor who is willing to contribute up to $30,000 matching dollar for dollar for every donation made by the community (20k towards safety and 10k towards technology). We will share more about this in the coming weeks. Please understand that while we must keep the routines of our everyday instructional practice as normal as possible, it is important to reinforce to the students and the community that we are focusing on additional efforts on safety at SW.

This past Thursday, I met with district wide principals, reviewing safety practices and procedures, lock down protocols and threat awareness. While I have asked all of you to review these procedures with your students these past couple of weeks, there will be additional hands-on training for you in the coming months. If you haven't reviewed our procedures, please do so immediately.

The district is also partnering with representatives of Sandy Hook Promise, an organization that teaches gun violence prevention. This will teach us ways as a staff to recognize the signs of a potential threat, especially on social media, and how to build a community of inclusiveness that prevents young people from becoming isolated from their peers.

So while we need secure buildings, and we at SW have some items in motion to increase the security at SW, as well as having an SRO on campus, we also need to recognize the signs of children in crisis and find outlets for help. Additionally, we must report legitimate threats and not perpetuate panic by blindly sharing unsubstantiated posts on social media.

I hope you are on board and understand as I say we will not solve this problem today. I am working with a team of parents in the coming weeks as we will be looking to acquire projects from the county as well as solicit funds to increase the level of security that is already coming our way. I will keep you updated with our plans for increasing safety at SWHS.

Another reminder as we start approaching the end of the year, GCS is expecting all staff to attend HS Graduation ceremonies and be in regalia. With this expectation, I will provide a FULL day of comp time that can be used for NEXT school year. The Graduation date for SWHS is Saturday, June 16 at 9:00 AM at the Greensboro Coliseum. More information will follow. It is expected that staff have the same expectations as students when it comes to dress attire. In other words, shorts, loafers, tank tops, hats would not be considered appropriate. For those of you that were at graduation last year, it really was a beautiful thing to see and recognize the staff for all that they do in front of 5000 people. You all deserve this at the very least.

Reminder: The building will always be open on Sunday from roughly 7-1 due to Piedmont Chapel church.
