Spring Break and the Week of April 9

Team -

First and foremost, I want to thank you for playing a role in the calmest week before Spring Break that I have personally experienced in all of my years in education. Maintaining instruction, being visible and active in your supervision expectations, refraining from parties, and focusing on consistency is a major role in creating this type of environment, especially before a holiday/break. For all of you who played their part in this, on behalf of the administrative team, thank you. Please enjoy your well deserved break and I look forward to seeing you on Monday, April 9th.

This past Thursday we conducted an unannounced school wide lock-down drill. A great job overall and I appreciate your patience with this, especially on the day before break. In many cases, it was great to see doors barricaded as that is exactly what you would do in a real situation!  We learned a few things that we need to brainstorm about such as: how does a sub lock his/her door and how does the computer lab door get locked if the teacher does not have a master key. Other than that, remember to communicate to your immediate evaluating supervisor of whether or not kids are accounted for, that you are out of sight during procedures, no noise, all lights are off and that any and all drills are non-negotiable in practicing. All normal activities must immediately stop. Thank you to all of you who contributed to the feedback needed to improve safety and security at SWHS.

The building can be accessed during Spring break from 8-3. If your fob does not work, Mr. Smith (Lead Custodian) can be reached on his cell as he will be in the building at that time: Cell - 336-847-4831.

We reached 100% participation on the Teacher's Working Condition Survey! A big thank you in advance to all of you as your feedback will be vital to the adjustments that will be needed by administration, staff, the students and the community. Hopefully all of you who took part in the jean day, it gave a you a little extra relaxation going into your well deserved break.

As you can see below, the last day for students to make up time/work is 4/20. Anything after that must have a pretty extreme reason and should be approved by me.

Per Mrs. Cline:

Grades are due the end of the day on Thursday, April 12th.

Grade changes can be submitted after report cards have been printed.  I have attached the grade change form that has to be filled out for all grade changes. You will make the change in your gradebook but you have to give me the form to let me know what you have changed in order for me to store the grade in their historical marks.

You should be entering grades for all students. INC’s are only for students that have had medical issues or student’s that have been pre-approved by Mr. Hettenbach to receive INC’s.

Students that need to make up time due to too many absences should receive an “55” and use comment code:
56244- An “55” indicates the attendance policy was violated

To add a comment for an individual student see step #4, to add a comment for the entire class to see step #8.

You will need to print out and give to me only the Score Sheet which is your spreadsheet with assignments & Final Grade. (screen shots are included in the attachment so you can see exactly what I am asking for)

By following these instructions below you can make sure your name & class are on your spreadsheet-

Once again, a reminder as we start approaching the end of the year, GCS is expecting all staff to attend HS Graduation ceremonies and be in regalia. With this expectation, I will provide a FULL day of comp time that can be used for NEXT school year. The Graduation date for SWHS is Saturday, June 16 at 9:00 AM at the Greensboro Coliseum. More information will follow. It is expected that staff have the same expectations as students when it comes to dress attire. In other words, shorts, loafers, tank tops, hats would not be considered appropriate. For those of you that were at graduation last year, it really was a beautiful thing to see and recognize the staff for all that they do in front of 5000 people. You all deserve this at the very least.

Reminder: The building will always be open on Sunday from roughly 7-1 due to Piedmont Chapel church.

Week of March 26

Team -

This past Wednesday we conducted a school wide lock-down drill.  We still have some work to do with this drill. Some areas we need to improve upon are listed below(and we are also adjusting language in the drills for better understanding):
  • All staff participates in these drills regardless of whether they have students or not. Everyone has a responsibility.
  • All staff must inform their primary evaluator through e-mail any students who are absent or that "all students are accounted for".
  • Lock down drills cause all normal activities to stop immediately.
  • There should be no noise.
Thank you to everyone who has been giving us feedback on ways to improve with all drills. This feedback includes students and and parents who are contacting us after we conduct drills. Moving forward, we will continue to practice and review with you more drills, such as active shooter (Run, Hide, Fight), post drill  expectations, reunification, and more. Please make sure you feel confident with not only conducting these drills, but that your students feel confident in understanding them as well. If not, please immediately ask for clarification.  Additionally, we are still moving forward with additional safety and security measures. At last Tuesday's community meeting, we are in the process of forming two separate committees regarding safety and security; planning, and fundraising. If you have any interest in being part of either of these committees, please feel free to reach out to  Wendy O'Hara at wopncmom2@gmail.com or to David Rosen at photoinnovations@gmail.com.

Please pay attention to all lunch schedule changes for Monday. The e-mail was sent by Mrs. Barnum on Friday, March 23 at 1:25 Pm. Any question should be referred to Mrs. Barnum.

As a reminder, grades should be updated at least once a week in Power School and then immediately before interim reports/report cards. The purpose of these updates is to allow parents to support you, assist their child, praise their child, and more. Please make sure you are updating Power School at least once a week. Any student with a D or an F (or a two letter grade drop from an A to a C) should receive a phone call home. Last, all zeros should always be entered, even if a student is out sick. While we all know you will work with a student who is out for medical reasons, failing to enter that zero is not an accurate reflection of their current grade. If the child forgets to make up any missed work, the parent never had an opportunity to intervene and therefore gets blindsided by the zeros being entered as interim reports or report cards get distributed.
Week of March 19

Team -

This past week, we reviewed the tornado drill and fire drill in 3 of 4 lunches in the cafeteria with the 4th lunch reviewing this drill on Monday. This is one location that we received many responses back on areas that we need to learn and practice.  We also implemented guidance and a reminder for subs when they check in on the computer in the front office. They will be prompted every single time they visit SW that their very first task when entering a classroom is to locate the teacher's safety plans. Please make sure these plans are easily accessible for your subs and peers who visit your room. This week, we have a school wide lockdown drill to practice. You should have already received information from Dr. Monell regarding this. If you can not locate it, please reach out to Dr. Monell. After this week we will review the expectations behind "Run, Hide, Fight".

Congratulations to SWHS DECA! SWHS had 40 proficiency winners out of 59 who competed, multiple medallion winners for role plays and their marketing tests. SWHS had 6 National winners. 4 more competitors were finalists but did not get in the top 5. Please assist me in congratulating the advisors and the students who represent us well!
The students going to Nationals are: Kevin Duong, Joseph Yoo, Sam Shores, Spencer Shores, Emma Sikes, Vanessa Sourisak. These students will compete at the International competition in Atlanta in April. Go SWHS DECA!!!

A big thank you for your supervision during last Wednesday's walk out. It was a very safe  and orderly (and cold) event for both students who chose to participate as well as those who chose not to.  If you hear anymore discussions from students about future walk outs, please keep me in the loop. It is my hope that the students feel good about the event, know how we need to move forward, and can allow instruction not to be interfered with as we approach the end of the year. We have already had students approaching administration wanting to lead new clubs surrounding important topics such as anti gun violence, students against drunk driving, students against violence everywhere, Let's Start with Hello, and more! This demonstrates how successful Wednesday was.
Once again, a reminder as we start approaching the end of the year, GCS is expecting all staff to attend HS Graduation ceremonies and be in regalia.
