Week of March 12

Team -

Please be sure that your cell phones have automatically adjusted to daylight savings, and that you have advanced all other clocks in your house and cars as daylight savings was this weekend.

Hopefully you are reading this Round Up as this is one of the multiple tools used for communication.  In addition to this, the SWHS calendar is a wonderful feature that can allow reminders. If you need assistance with Outlook to help with being reminded of events, please see Karen Meier, or any administrator, for an overview of this amazing tool. Moving forward, if you are running late, or missing a mandatory meeting, please let the admin team know ahead of time. We all understand unexpected items may arise, but communication is important.

Great job to all recipients of our monthly faculty meeting. It is a privilege to have so many amazing contributors to the Ranch. The selection of awards is so difficult for the admin team because of such an overwhelmingly amazing staff. Thank you for making this such a challenge!

This past week, we reviewed the tornado drill (great job by the way and wonderful feedback from teachers which will assist us in making this procedure stronger) as well as our monthly fire drill. If you are one of those teachers whose class was one of the last classes to exit the building on the fire drill, please see Dr. Monell for an alternate route. Exiting from the 2nd floor of the C building needs to be improved (too many classes exiting down the same halls and doorways and hopefully the dialogue between teachers and admin will improve these pathways moving forward. We will continue to ask you to review certain drills, show videos, etc. The biggest feedback I have received from homes is that their child does not feel comfortable with the drills because they are never mentioned in the classroom. While I understand how students can share information to the home and it may not always be accurate, we certainly need to review these practices with our students more than once a semester. Additionally, make sure subs have easy access and can understand these procedures with ease. I have a safety and security meeting Tuesday evening from 6-7 in the auditorium for parents if anyone wishes to come, however, this is not required for any staff. We will be discussing what GCS has plans for us, the donation that is coming our way, opportunities for others to contribute, and the direction we would like to move at SWHS with additional safety and security measures.

If you have been reading the news about GCS students walking out on Wednesday, please know I am extremely proud that our students have approached me as well as other staff inquiring about various dates over the next month with walking out. One of our many student leaders has been working alongside Mr. Hawkins in organizing a meaningful walk out. We decided that we will conduct this walk out one time, this Wednesday, at 10:00 AM for 17 minutes honoring the 17 lives lost in Florida. While I understand there were many dates floating around for these walk-outs, we wanted to use this one date as a non political platform to honor the lives lost in the Florida event.  Everyone will be participating in this walkout and attendance marks will not be adjusted. Anyone who abuses this time frame will have attendance marks adjusted and consequences provided. If there is any student who feels strongly about not walking out, please refer their name to me and we will find a location for them to be supervised during the walk-out. More information will be forthcoming.

There may be times during this week that you will see roughly 40 students from Wiley Elementary school on our campus this week. David Olds, student leader over Wiley's Warriors, has developed multiple events over the week that will work with Wiley Elementary and in turn, we will be sending some of our HS students over to Wiley Elementary. Please remind our students that we have young people in our building and we need to demonstrate proper behaviors. Additionally, David set up a volunteer opportunity for both Wiley and SWHS staff on Tuesday with Out of the Garden Project from 4:00-5:30.  A free meal is included, however, make sure you RSVP with David as soon as possible. davidolds42@gmail.com  This will be a wonderful opportunity for us as adults to demonstrate to our students that we contribute back to the community as well outside of our educational expectations. While we often remind our students how important this is, we can now model this. Comp time will be provided to anyone who attends this function.

Once again, a reminder as we start approaching the end of the year, GCS is expecting all staff to attend HS Graduation ceremonies and be in regalia. With this expectation, I will provide a FULL day of comp time that can be used for NEXT school year. The Graduation date for SWHS is Saturday, June 16 at 9:00 AM at the Greensboro Coliseum. More information will follow. It is expected that staff have the same expectations as students when it comes to dress attire. In other words, shorts, loafers, tank tops, hats would not be considered appropriate. For those of you that were at graduation last year, it really was a beautiful thing to see and recognize the staff for all that they do in front of 5000 people. You all deserve this at the very least.

Reminder: The building will always be open on Sunday from roughly 7-1 due to Piedmont Chapel church.
