Week of March 25th

Staff,

We have a special program on March 26th, Tuesday, called VIP for a VIP. This is for Juniors and Seniors only. You may recall us having this program quite a long time ago. The VIP for a VIP program will consist of a one hour presentation in the auditorium for seniors from 10:00-11:10 providing testimony and statistics directly related to teenage fatalities. (Make sure the seniors take their belongings with them) We do not have the capacity to have juniors during the AM session.  In the afternoon, Juniors and Seniors will assemble outside for a demonstration of a fatal car crash. Please send the students out at the 2:00/2:05 bell out to the back parking lot.  They will be sent back in at 2:55. This will be held out back in the parking lot in front of the tennis courts. I will continue to alert parents that if they do not want their child to be a part of this program to send a letter in to me to excuse him or her.  Any staff that can assist us during any of these times would be greatly appreciated.

This program is dedicated to the students that have lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents while attending Southwest Guilford High School since it opened.  We sincerely believe that through an on-going teenage driver education program and strong parental support, teenage traffic fatalities can be eliminated in our community. We consider the students at Southwest Guilford High School VIP's. If any parent wishes for their child not to participate, please send a note in to the school directed to me.

The deadline for GTCC applications is fast approaching. Students should see their counselors for information regarding documents and make an appointment with Ms. Whitlow to register for classes. Applications are in the counseling office.

To the Class of 2020.  The College Board Opportunity Scholarships are a series of monthly drawing scholarships from $500 to $40,000 dollars for your graduation class.  Attached is a flyer with an embedded video and link for you to interact with and start earning entries for these national scholarships.  All students are eligible for these scholarships based only on completing from one to all six of the action steps that lead to college admissions.   Drawings have already begun so the sooner you complete these two steps, the sooner your entries will be added to the next drawing.

The first two steps are really easy.  They are to open a College Board Account and then register for the scholarship challenge via cb.org/opportunity

If you need assistance with these steps, have the student stop by their School Counselor’s office and they will help them.

Next Friday is a MANDATED Work Day.  On Friday, March 29, 2019, we will have a representative from the organizatioTeaching Tolerance here to facilitate the second Professional Developments presented from Southern Poverty Law Center. Our facilitator will be Sarah Blackburn and she will present the workshop "Social Justice Teaching 101."
The location of the PD will be in the Media Center and we will begin promptly at 8:30. Our schedule for that day will be as follows:
1st Session: 8:30-11:15
Lunch 11:15-12:45 (Lunch will be on your own - note time increase)
2nd Session: 12:45-3:30

Grading must be put in PowerSchool each week. The endo fth e3rd quarter grading period is this coming Thursday. If you can relate as a parent who wants to be an active part of a child's academics, it is hard to play that role when there is no documentation to respond to. Please keep the grades updated each week, and make sure you are providing enough grades as you navigate through the semester.

This past week I have made a point to speak to a number of students individually about their experiences in school. I enjoyed these conversations thoroughly as well as building a relationship with these students. The two take-aways I received from the various conversations were to remind the adults in the building to build personal connections with their students as well as hold individual students accountable for their decisions, not the entire class. ..... something to think about as we navigate through the remainder of the year.

Please reinforce to the students to be wearing the cards around their neck. Look how happy she is wearing that lanyard!
