Week of Oct 28

Hello Ranchers!!!

We just came off a very busy Homecoming week and there are many thanks that need to go out to everyone who played a major role in all of the activities. Thank you so much for your effort! You are the GREATEST!
I want you to take a moment to look at the video below (If it does not play for you, I will also send it via e-mail). I hope you all see what I see, which is 1600+ students respecting a very small number of their peers while they perform in front of them. This is chilling. At a large comprehensive High School, such as ours, I will put us above anyone with what you all do for our kids on a daily basis. The level of character that is demonstrated form our students is simply amazing. Kudos to Mrs. Butler and her chorus. Kudos to our students for demonstrating what they have been taught. And finally, kudos to all of YOU for teaching our students the level of character that all of our students demonstrated today. Thank you for all that you do!

Wednesday is the Pre-Act for Sophomores. This is approximately a 4 hour session so please make sure you remind your sophomores to sleep well and have a nutritious breakfast. Students, if at all possible, should bring a graphing or scientific calculator with them.

Seniors will be placing their graduation supply orders this Wednesday during set time. Once all seniors have had this opportunity, they will be allowed the option to have lunch and then be dismissed thereafter.

As we address students with consequences that involve a placement into RS (Restoration Station) or OSS, it is vital that students get all of their work needed. In some cases, we may have to assign a student immediately into RS. It is important to have some work prepared in advance in lieu of these events as we know it is very difficult to stop instruction to gather work. When a student placement is communicated 24 hours in advance, it is crucial that work is provided. While students may serve consequences for their behavior, they should not be receiving academic consequences by not receiving their work. If students do not get their work, they will only fall behind in your class which can then lead to unnecessary situations upon their return. This is also a wonderful opportunity to provide students with any missing work form the past. Thank you for making the necessary adjustments to keep our on top of their academics

REPORT CARDS GO OUT NOVEMBER 5TH

10 day window for students to make up is 11/12

All grades need to be submitted by the end of the day Thursday, Oct 31st.

Grade changes can be submitted after spreadsheets have been turned in.  I have attached the grade change form that has to be filled out for all grade changes. You will make the change in your gradebook but you have to give me the form to let me know what you have changed in order for me to store the grade in their historical marks.

You should be entering grades for all students.    INC’s are only for students that have had medical issues or student’s that have been pre-approved by Mr. Hettenbach to receive INC’s.

Students that need to make up time due to too many absences should receive an “55” and use comment code:
56244- A “55” indicates the attendance policy was violated. Follow the dates for the 10 day window below.

You will need to print out and give to me only the Score Sheet which is your spreadsheet with assignments & QTR Grade. (screen shots are included in the attachment so you can see exactly what I am asking for)

Report cards will be printed on Nov. 4th and they will be given to students Tuesday, November 5th.

This Thursday is Halloween. Please know that at Southwest Guilford High School we do not allow costumes or accessories of any kind on this day. With just coming off Homecoming/spirit week, this includes for staff as well. Additionally, I have asked all families to make sure students are not bringing in any candy they have accumulated during this time. Please keep the candy at home.

It's back! The SWGHS Parent Empowerment Summit. An amazing opportunity for our community members to visit an array of sessions that will help them better navigate as a parent! Lock it down in your calendar and share it with all! Post this on your door, set up an incentive with your class so their parents attend. If you have any interest in being a part of this in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out to Michelle Phillips!
Teachers:  Please begin to share the information with your email distribution lists.  Talk about it with your students as well.  The Parent Empowerment Summit is specifically for parents and guardians of middle and high school students however, students are welcome to volunteer. We will have childcare provided by our Early Childhood Classes.  Student groups from HOSA, SAVE and Service Learning will be participating at this time.  If additional students would like to volunteer or would like to represent an organization, please have them see Mrs. Michelle Phillips.

Parents:  No need to register for the free event.   This event has been well attended in the past and many parents have said it was the best parent workshop they ever attended.

Ways to Win Prizes:
Teachers:  You will be entered into a drawing to win GOOD gift cards if you do any of the following…
  1. Copy Michelle Phillips on email distribution sharing the event and encouraging parents to attend
  2. Send proof that you invite friends on FB or share the event on Facebook
  3. Send proof of communication with students regarding how they will earn extra credit if their parent attends (a list of attendees will be sent to SWGH staff following the event with student names)
  4. You will be entered twice if you volunteer at the event, sign up sheet will be posted soon near the workroom (plus you will earn comp time for upcoming snow days)
  5. Lastly, if you have a way to advertise or get more parents to attend, let Michelle Phillips know as well.
Thank you, this event is truly a team effort.
OneCard identification badge wearing will be starting this week.  Students should have a OneCard and their own Lanyard. Stduents may tell you they need a OneCard or a Lanyard. Please e-mail Mr. Miller for missing cards, and teachers can also pick up extra Lanyards in the main office workroom.

Students will use the OneCards to
  1. Swipe into school
  2. Purchase Cafeteria Meals
  3. Checkout materials in the Media Center.
Please be patient during the first weeks of swiping as students will have to get used to the new flow of traffic and expectations.

Swiping starts at 7:40. Swiping supervisors be ready!  Students should not bypass the machines until an adult on duty allows them to pass.
